Best Wireless router on a budget?

Envious, why? Because I had to host a AT&T tech, who told me my house wiring is fouled up, or because I found a hack for my crappy modem?
 
Because of the modem. I've had a lot of interesting-looking CPE boxes, but never have been able to find ways to hack into them or repurpose them when I change ISPs.

Note to self: get around to throwing those old DSL modems away!
