Sorry, for the vagueness... so here are some more details
The app was built with 2 goals:
1. Help relay emergency workers more quickly than you could on your own.
2. Provide additional information for an investigation if needed.
So lets take a look at a really bad scenario -
You are driving through the woods alone when you have blowout and you run off the road hitting a tree. You are knocked unconscious. A Stranger comes to "help" and tries taking you to his cabin deep in the woods. You struggle and break away and he shoots at you and you are struck in the leg.
So What does the App do?
1) The moment your vehicle impacts your phones accelerometers indicate that there was an impact and it asks you to cancel the emergency trigger.
2) Because you are unconscious so you don't cancel the emergency so my office calls to verify that you are okay. Again no Answer so we use your phones GPS signal to identify exactly where you are.
3) We let emergency workers know that we have a trigger on an abandoned road and they start heading in your direction.
4) Your "friend" has arrived and is helping you to his cabin deep in the woods
5) You come to and struggle (we get another impact trigger and maybe a sound trigger) we attempt to call again and your new friend throws your phone into the woods, BUT we have an updated GPS location somewhere between the accident and this guys house.
6) You break free and run away and the crazy guy shoots you (if he didn't throw the phone very far we get a sound trigger). Luckily statistics show that most people will survive a gunshot wound if medical help arrives quickly.
7) The bad guy runs away leaving you to die but emergency workers arrive shortly after
8) Because we have the GPS of your phone the police collect that and pull the bad guys fingerprints and track him to his home in the area.
Effectively, the app is capable to helping you in some way at every step. From detecting possible emergencies using the technology built into every phone, to relaying emergency workers to your exact location, and then during an investigation.
Of course if you can dial 911 you should, in this case you were unconscious, but remember that you were struggling when the app triggered. If you don't have the app you have to wait until after the fight and then you have to get to a safe place and then make a call. That takes a lot more time.
