Help Better way to be notified of a text message?

I just recently upgraded to the M8 from the Note 2 on Verizon and was wondering if there was any additional options to be notified of a text message?

Coming from the Galaxy Note 2 and the iPhone 4S before that the screen would light up with a preview of the message while also playing the notification sound. I noticed on the M8 only the notification sound is played and the LED light blinks when a message is received while the screen remains off.

Just curious if there's any option at all to make it happen or if I'm stuck with just a blinking light to notify me.
