Beware : Words with friends eating up battery

If you downloaded words with friends today keep an eye on your battery life. It has been reported that this game sucks up battery like crazy. Go into your battery use and see for yourself.

I am uninstalling for now. Will get it again when they fix it.

I have been using it all day, made a few calls, texted, surfed, etc and have 30% battery left after 17 hours of being unplugged on my HTC Desire HD. Battery usage shows it using 3%.

Hmmmm another friend also noticed high battery usage. Both of us on DroidX. Could be an issue on certain phones?

I have a DX and don't see to have any extra drain. Sure, if you are playing the game, you'll use a lot of battery just from having the screen on so much. But, just having the games in progress, but the phone sleeping, no, that doesn't appear to be affecting me much, if any.

Appreciate the input. So it seems to be a hit or miss. I understand what you are saying about keeping the screen on. I was comparing same amount of screen time for Wordfeud and WWF. WWF nearly kills the battery where WF won't even use 10% of what WWF used. Does not make any sense. I will uninstall and reinstall.

I unplugged my Droid X at 7:30 this morning and it was dead by 2:30. I didn't play the game today, but it is "waiting on a move". That's the only thing different on my phone today so that has to be the problem.

My G2 went from full to 65% in about 3 hours, and that's with the phone doing nothing at all the whole time (sleeping in a locker, screen off, wifi and mobile data off, etc.). The only thing I've changed is installing Words with Friends. If that's not the cause, it's a strange coincidence.

It is not a coincidence folks. And I am relieved that I am not going nuts. This is happening to others as well.

I posted it so that you phone does not die in the middle of night and you miss the morning alarm (what would have happened with me if I didn't plug it in). This thing is guzzling battery like there is no tomorrow.

futuremonkey, can you look at battery use and see what ate the battery?

Uninstall or beware!! :)

If Zynga botched the notifications framework, then the battery use would fall under the "Android System" and not "Words with Friends".

Using a Desire HD and it absolutely killed my battery life. Using Wordfued for now.. much lighter on the battery, and less force closes.

Good info. That's exactly what I was seeing. "Android System" was at around 20% of battery consumption, on a phone that was sitting idle and unused for ~3 hours.

That said, I'm pretty new to Android, so...

I enjoy the game, but it is killing the battery on both mine, and my wife's Captivates
63% when I got to work @ 8, 3% @ 10.
Phone was 100% when I went to bed @ 10 last night

I've emailed Zynga support about this issue. Haven't heard back yet. Hopefully they are looking in this issue.

Meantime Wordfeud works for me. :)

Why would it kill your Desire HD yet have zero drain on mine? Seems strange to say the least.

Its a strange one.. don't know. But to be honest it shouldnt matter which phone we use.. if the app is poorly optimized then it should drain battery on all phones. It is a first release after all.
