Beware : Words with friends eating up battery

I just got my Charge a week ago. Battery life is, meh, not so great, but I knew that before I purchased it. Downloaded WWF because I already had a ton of games going on my iPhone before it died, and the android version doesn't work as well and isn't as smooth as the iPhone version. I also had my phone almost all the way charged and it was down to almost shutting off levels within an hour and a half. I was waiting at the tax place and played a few plays on WWF. I'll have to assume it's the WWF that drained it so quickly as I've never had that happen that fast (within an hour and a half.) I would have thought Zynga would have had this issue fixed by now.

It certainly does use a lot of battery. It does a lot of background downloading of ads and displaying the graphics is battery intensive.

But mostly it would be all the background downloading it does. If you have a weak signal this can be amplified by your phone working harder to try and find 3G/WiFi/etc

it is killing the battery in my evo. i am new to the evo but it seems to be the ads that it switches you to after every word played. is there a pay version yet that i can get that doesn't have the ads? i can't seem to find one.but read a post from feb that said it should be out in a few months...

Searched google for "words with friends battery life" and this is the first post. It's killing my Dinc battery, and if I don't remember to exit back to the homescreen before turning the screen off, my phone will get warm and the battery will get killed. It seems like whatever this app is doing, it's doing it constantly and causing CPU activity to spike up to 100% until I exit the app, according to System Monitor. When I check "Device Usage" that's only at 100% when I was playing, but the CPU activity stays spiked no matter what, as long as the app is the last thing active prior to turning the screen off.

EDIT: Well, I tried turning off the notifications completely, I really couldn't care less about them anyways (I just check the game when I get a moment and the notifications didn't seem to be 100% working in the first place), and it looks like there is no longer 100% CPU activity with keeping WWF open and the phone sleeping. So it looks like the culprit here was indeed the push notification system WWF uses. At least that was an easy fix!

EDIT 2: Ok, well it looks like that didn't help, the battery is still being chewed apart if an actual game is left open with the phone sleeping, just not the home page of the game. So I guess you just need to be diligent with making sure you back out of a game with someone prior to letting the screen turn off.

I hooked it to my charger when I noticed my battery was getting a little low. By the time I quit it was in the red. My charger can't even keep up with it. I uninstalled it and it's not going back til it's fixed.

It's really disappointing this app is so bad. I would love to play with my friends on iOS, but I'm not even going to bother downloading this app, because I know I will eventually have to uninstall it. The devs need to get their act together and start giving not just iOS respect, but Android as well.

Interesting; I found that Facebook WWF causes either the Chrome or Firefox browser process to use nearly all CPU, too. When first loaded it uses a small amount of CPU, but overtime (even if left idle; ie, no moves made) eventually uses as much CPU as possible. If I kill the tab in which WWF is loaded, the browser process CPU usage immediately drops to a small amount.

If you use badassbattery, you'll see WWF uses the most usage of the apps. If you look within the app, it uses the accelerometer which is what I think drains the battery. (shake to shuffle)

I uninstalled it because it was SLOW AS HELL!! Got to where it took 15 seconds or more to send a word. Wordfeud is so much better. So much faster. Plus, notifications are INSTANT with Wordfeud. I've sat in the same room with someone I'm playing and when they send their word, I have a notification before they set their phone down!

Mark my words. Zynga is uploading more than your word. Time will prove me right.
