So I can't seem to find reliable transportation to work so I have to invest in a bicycle. I am curious as to which brands are higher quality and what to look for as far as features like traction control because there are not a lot if sidewalks in my area.

Keep in mind that I haven't used a bicycle in a while si I'm pretty much a bike noob

The one that I am looking at is mongoose. Which brand gives me more quality for the price?
 
I've bought two bikes from this site:

They're more or less off brand, but some with excellent components. You have to put it together (and it's not that hard), however, the prices can't be beat.
Biggest thing is making sure you measure yourself properly before ordering. Each bike has a size chart so be sure it is correct before ordering.

My main reason for buying from them is: good components, decent frames, excellent prices and brands no one will notice (DC has a bike theft problem).
 
I'm really looking for some options cheaper than that. You might laugh when I say this but I was considering getting one from Walmart only because I can't afford a premium one at this point. $200 is about my price range, plus I got to buy a decent bike lock and pump. That site has some really nice ones, but unfortunately I accidently pressed the shrink ray on my wallet xD

The Flying Pigeon, made in Tianjin since 1950. No nonsense, and will last you decades with not much maintenance, apart from periodic oiling.

Not only do I know about Chinese tablets, I also know about Chinese bicycles. :)
 
how long is your ride to work? You can find a nice new fixie for $200 bucks.

If you are planning to leave it on the street I would go for something cheap.
 
My work is 4 and a half miles away from where I am now. Most of it is on dirt there isn't a lot of sidewalk. There are some curbs I will need to jump so I definitely need something with decent suspension.

And yes, I have to leave it outside at work, obviously since it's food service I can't keep it inI the building.
 
I would check your local craigslist for some used, decent midrange bikes. There always seem to be good ones in your price range. A bike that is used, but started life as a higher end rig will be better for you than any brand new Wally World special. The components are better, and will last longer than a big box store piece, and it will be more comfortable as well. Good luck!
 
You won't find a decent suspension on a bike for under $200 and the cheaper bikes don't hold up well to even moderate abuse, they are made to "look like" the heavier duty bikes. I will reiterate the previous comments and suggest you find a better bike used.
 
Thanks. I think that's fair to do a little bit of price shopping. Funny thing was I was thinking about Craigslist for something else, and I never thought to make a concerted effort I have heard horror stories but what percentage of them are true, yknow.
 
Check out Freecycle too. Not sure how robust it is in your neck of the woods.
We're fortunate to have a great public bike system called Bike Share. They have stations all over the city and always growing. You can get a daily pass or just pay monthly.
Never used it myself but friends say it's great and super convenient.

Have you considered a folding bike? Maybe you can squeeze a space for it somewhere, like Dahon Uno. http://www.amazon.com/Dahon-Speed-Folding-Bike-Shadow/dp/B004YHZ9QK (you can find review videos on Youtube as well) I picked one up from ebay brand new for $320 last week. It's simple, relatively light, fun to ride and practical.

P.S. I would never leave my bike outside, it's like slowly killing it.
 
My suggestion is to get to a bike shop and get a good one and don't cheap out. Remember this bike can possibly last you the rest of your life as long as it doesn't get stolen. In the passed I cheaper out and got a bike from target for less than 100 and it dididnt last the summer.

you are certainly right about getting a good bike such as cannondale or specialized or else. OP is planning to leave it outside, so its pointless to get a good bike.

I know I can bend a chainring of a cheap crankset walmart bike, I've done that.
 
For your price range I would say mongoose when I use to ride bike that was the bike to have around here. Still have my mongoose mt bike I got back in 6th grade (over 10 years ago) and it works perfect still!
