Help BIG Galaxy S5 Problems (Freezing/Apps "Not Responding")

So, I bought the GS5 a few weeks after it was released. It has been perfect up until a few months ago. Keep in mind, this didn't happen gradually. It was very sudden.
My phone started "freezing" frequently. But it's not the normal type of freezing. If I'm watching a YouTube video, the picture will freeze for 10-30 seconds, but the audio will keep playing without a hitch. And it frequently gives me the "app not responding" message about whatever app I'm using, but if I just tap the "wait" option, I can go back to using the app. And whenever I'm typing a text, into Google, this forum, or anywhere else, the keyboard will just randomly freeze for a few seconds and I can't type. Also, sometimes it will freeze and then just go back to the lock screen when I'm in the middle of doing something. Sometimes when I make a phone call, it won't actually make the call for 3-10 minutes. And the creepiest thing of all is that it frequently makes the sound that it makes when you unlock the phone, when I'm not even touching it or anything.
I haven't downloaded any unauthorized apps or anything. And I have a very good Antivirus program. So I'm 95% sure it's not a virus. I am very careful about that kind of stuff.
I haven't tried a factory reset or anything because my cloud space is full and it's just a pain to back everything up and then restore it. When I first got this phone, it took me months to get all of my contacts restored and I still don't have all of them. So I'd rather not have to do that, but I have a sneaking suspicion it wouldn't fix anything anyway.
I am living 5 hours from home, so my phone is very important to me. My vehicle broke down the other day and I was stranded for hours because of this. Any and all help/suggestions are very much appreciated. Is anyone having the same or similar problems? Does anyone know a fix? Thanks so much, everyone!

give clearing your cache a try, it won't hurt anything and it might help :)

I always prescribe first pulling your battery out of your phone while its own. Now replace your battery hold down the power button volume up button and home button at the same time to get into recovery. Now select wipe cache partition hit the power button and let it wipe the cache then select reboot phone and see if that helps

Hello and welcome to Android Forums Caleb Silz :)

Sorry to learn that you are having problems. Lets see if we can get to the bottom of it.

Am I right in thinking that you have the Verizon carrier branded variant of the Galaxy S5 and have you updated to Lollipop?

Irrespective of your reply, the first recourse for you, should be to clear any rubbish out of your cache partition by following the instructions and video in #1.3 of S5 Lollipop Update Problems - Dummies Guide. This is always a good thing to do, particularly after an update.

Lets see if that helps your situation.

EDIT. Ninja' by systemofadown. Now you have it in stereo!

Verizon S5 here also, every time that has happened to me, I did the ^^^^^ above it and fixed things up.

Clearing cache once a month/week or so is just good maintenance.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have been clearing my cache regularly with an app for a while now but I just did it the way you suggested. Unfortunately, it didn't seem to fix anything. Any other suggestions?

Step 2 is to run your phone in Safe Mode, (see #1.4 of S5 Lollipop Update Problems - Dummies Guide), for awhile to determine whether your problem is caused by the actual firmware itself or the user apps and settings.

I much prefer google for backing up my contacts compared to verizon cloud. Had to restore them once and it went quick with Google so give it a try. Mary

I gave up on Verizon's Cloud because it won't sync up reliably anymore. So, I disabled that app altogether.

I now use Super Backup and store the backups locally and in my email folders.
