Help Big network usage and battery drain

Sarevok

Newbie
Hi everyone,

I have bought the Samsung Galaxy S2 a week ago, and I am already having problems with the network usage and the battery life. :(

- First, the network usage. On Friday, I had my first full day of 3G and I noticed the phone used 15Mb of data, without much surfing or certainly no downloading . That is, it used 15Mb only with the Twitter/Facebook widget, the exchange mail app (for which I limited the downloaded email size to 2Kb) and Gmail (I didn't even receive any mail)!
Well, that really concerned me and, since then, I've been trying to track the problem down. I am now using "Network Usage" to track my data consumption per app, but I don't see anything relevant there. I deleted my exchange account and now my cell phone used 2Mb of data during the night (during which I didn't even touch it). That's an improvement, but it's still a lot for just the Twitter and Facebook widgets.
I downloaded an Antivirus (from AVG Mobilation), but it doesn't find anything unusual. Do you have any idea what could be causing such data usage? My previous phone, an HTC Legend, had exactly the same set of app, and had, at MAXIMUM, 200Kb of data usage for only these widgets. I'm starting to think the Samsung engineers are really incompetent .

- The second point: the battery. The phone was fully charged before the night. After 8 hours without using it, the battery has already been drained by 40%! Bluetooth was off, 3G was off, only WiFi was on. The screen was off for the whole night, and I didn't receive any call.
So, I go and check the "Battery Use", and I see the following highest battery user for the last 8 hours:
Android System 18%
Dialer 16%
Cell standby 15%
Phone idle 11%
WTF Samsung??? I know for having had another Android phone that the Android System should NOT use so much battery! And the Dialer? How have they programmed it? I didn't do any call, nor did receive any, and the Dialer is still draining 16% of my battery? Do they use real engineers at Samsung?
Further down the list, I also found that "Polaris Office" was using 5% (this is a program that I never even opened since I bought the phone - at least the HTC bloatware was not draining my battery) and that "Android OS" using 4% (what is the different between Android OS and Android System?).
I am really desperate here as well. This is certainly not what I would expect from a quality phone. Does any of you have any suggestion for this issue?

For information, I bought my phone in Belgium, and did the update to 2.3.5 this week. I am thinking about doing a "factory reset", but I don't know if that would solve anything. Any thought?

Anyway, you can see I am really disappointed in a phone I bought just a week ago. Any help would be greatly appreciated :). Thanks in advance!;)

If you use 3G watchdog pro, it can help you check data usage by application and you can try to find the rogue apps.

If you use BetterBatteryStats, you can check for wakelogs which should indicate what apps are preventing the phone from going to sleep. When you are not using the phone and still have battery drain, wakelogs are the common problem.

Cheers

Thanks for your answer :).

I don't have 3G Watchdog Pro, but I do have "Network Usage", which also gives me the data consumption per app. The two biggest network user are Market and Email (the standard Samsung app for exchange). That's why I disabled my exchange account on the Samsung (thought I don't consider it a long-term decision). None of the "big consumer apps" consumed any data during the night, so it must be one of the smaller, internal, applications.

As for the battery, the standard battery use indicates that's an internal android process that's using the whole power. Is it normal that the "Android System" process is using so much? And what is the difference with "Android OS"? I think that in my HTC I had only one of them.

If market is taking up a chunk of the data, maybe its because you have automatic updates and it updates your apps without knowing it. I don't like it to update without me knowing, so I put it as manual and I only update with wifi connection on usually.

Maybe you can see if thats the case.

As for android, if you are not using the phone, then the android OS / System usually takes up the chunk of battery usage. When you are using the phone, its usually the display, unless you are using heavy duty games. Not sure bout difference between system and OS.

Thanks. I had already deactivated all automatic updates from the Market. So it can't be coming from there.

I'm at a loss here. I'm starting to think that it might be the updated to 2.3.5, that maybe the Samsung Belgium team screwed something up. I was only on 2.3.3 for a few days, but I didn't notice any problem. Does anybody else on this forum use this phone from Belgium and has done the upgrade? I'd like to know if I'm the only one experiencing these issues...

Also, I might do a "factory reset", and add the app one at a time to check the data and battery consumption (so I'm using a pretty standard set of apps, but... you never know). Will a factory reset also reset the OS version?

I have just noticed that after a reboot of the phone, the stats from "Network Usage" are reset :). I wasn't aware of that. This is going to help to track exactly what app has been using network data during the night...

As for the battery problem, it would seem that it is an issue of Gingerbread: a lot of users are noticing abnormal Dialer/Android System battery use when using that OS:
Issue 17383 - android - Dialer stuck in partial wakelock - Android - An Open Handset Alliance Project - Google Project Hosting
The work-around is to reboot the phone after every call (gee, thanks Google...). I'll try that as well for the night and keep you posted ;).

Not anymore. When I bought it last Saturday, it was the newest firmware in Belgium, but the update to 2.3.5 (skipping the one to 2.3.4) was released during the week. I didn't have the phone in its 2.3.3 version for enough time to notice any difference, but I'm willing to go back to 2.3.3 if it can solve my issues. Is there something wrong with 2.3.5?

No, 2.3.5 is the best firmware I have had so far. 2.3.3 was a BIG drain on the battery and 2.3.4 really messed up the screen resolution, galleries and display.

I know it will erase all of your apps and data, but have you tried a factory reset?

Factory reset is indeed one of the options, will probably do it tomorrow if my experiment of tonight isn't helpful.

As for the OS version, I have a feeling it's more dependent on the country versions... For example, in Belgium, they skipped version 2.3.4 and went directly to 2.3.5, but added some Belgium-specific bloatware (like there wasn't enough bloatware on the phone already)!

So, here are the results from my tests:

- Battery: well, killing the "Dialer" process helped a bit, but not drastically. The phone had 67% left after the night, which still seems a bit too low. However, the battery usage stats now seem more logical, without the "Android System" and the "Dialer" draining all the battery.

- Network Usage: This is more surprising. The phone used 1.5Mb overnight. However, only 500Kb are used by real apps, the other 1Mb is used by system apps! Again, WTF Samsung? Why did you design a system which is such a data hog? And, also, what are these apps sending and to whom?
Service "SNS" was the second bigger network user of the night. What does it do, by the way?
And then, there was a big list of system apps / Samsung bloatware which sent exactly the same amount of data, which were certainly not supposed to use the network.

These all sent exactly 160B and received 24B each (again, to and from whom?):
- Dialer
- Dialer Storage
- DataCreate
- SIM Toolkit
- Samsung Account (I don't even have a Samsung Account!!!)
- CrashNotififer
- CSC
- Call Settings
- wipeoutreceiver

And then the following sent exactly 24B and received 112B each:
- Android System
- MTP Application
- Preconfig
- BluetoothTest
- Security Storage
- Settings Storage
- Account and Sync Settings
- VPN Services
- Settings
- Mobile tracker
- Status Bar
- Google Backup Transport
- AlertRecipients
- com.samsung.inputEventApp
- Licence settings
- com.samsung.app.playreadyui
- BluetoothAvrcp
- USB setttings
- Task manager
- EncryptApp
- Factory Test
- Kies via Wi-Fi
- com.sec.android.app.lcdtest
- Perso
- PhoneUtil
- PopupuiReceiver
- Self Test Mode
- Service mode
- Video maker
- WlanTest
- DRM content
- Error
- wssyncmlnps
- Software update

Keep in mind that the phone was not even being used while all this network data was exchanged! Is it normal for these apps to access the network constantly? Is it a problem on all Samsung Galaxy S2 phones, or do I have a problem with mine? Thanks for your help :).

my dialer literally takes up more space than i do on youtube. its like, 10mb+ per day.. thats 300mb/month average. what in the world is going on? i pay for these megabits!
