big news: AT&T to allow amazon appstore

May very few new apps. Rumors (phandroid.com) are that Roxio will have some particular edition of Angry Birds exclusively on Amazon's App Store.

I think the bigger point is choice and competition.

But some people say what's the point of having multiple stores that hawk the same wares?

The point is NOT to have Apple-like control at a single choke point. (Hear that AT&T?) Many of the things you buy at Walmart are available at Target (and other stores) and vice-versa.

Stores will compete for developers by offering better deals. Stores will compete for shoppers by offering better deals. In such a competitive market, prices for consumers tend to drop the lowest point where everyone can still make a profit. A developer would be more likely to put their app on a store that offers the developer more profit. So there are competing forces at work that cause the market to reach prices that customers are willing to pay, but that stores and developers can profit from.

All you have to do is enable sideloading and you can use the Amazon app store now. In any event, it's all the same as the market anyway..I don't see any real difference in browsing it for a few minutes. Too many app markets are going to confuse the issue IMO

Me too, the only thing that is blocking amazon app store from working is, of course, the fact that the amazon app store needs to be installed as an apk. As long as you have enabled side loading in some manner then you'll be able to use amazon's new app store and not have to wait on AT&T to graciously allow it.

Sideloading must be enabled.

On non rooted phone, you can install the Amazon App Store, but it cannot install any apps from the store.

To obtain the APK, go to Amazon App Store. Enter email address (NOT mobile phone number). They email you a message with link to download the APK. Using ADB command (developer tools), you can easily install the APK.

adb install Amazon_Appstore-release.apk

But once you launch it, and try to install a free app, it fails with a security warning.
