Big Warning on "Superclean"

Thank you for that app warning, whs37! :)

I've removed the link to the virus-bearing website provided in OP. Please do not link to known virus sites. ;)

LOL, that was not a link. It was just a picture of a link. I know better than linking a virus.

The app does not show on the Playstore any more anyhow.

I don't blame you for thinking I was saying you were actually linking to the virus itself.. my wording could be taken that way. I apologize.

It was a link to the Russian site as reproduced by the reporting entity, still not a good thing to do here as it could appear to newer users to be a link to the site with the virus, and some silly users like to spread those things around. ;)

That's why it's gone as "removed link to virus-bearing app."

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

No problem. You are doing a good job. Better be safe than sorry.

How can this happen? I thought that the Play Store was like a repository which should only serve up safe apps.

I contacted Play a while back about an app I saw which was a gag app. Although totally worthless I didn't have a problem with the app. I had a problem with the reviewers saying that the app made them review the app before they installed it. In other words it had an overly high fake rating and it was a useless app. I never heard back from google .

Google regularly scans the play store for malicious code. That doesn't guarantee its safe, only safer than most

Android also recently added client sided scanning

asking anybody. and isht happens, otherwise what would the point of those programs be? obviously something malicious can get through even "safe sources" like Play, as evidenced by Superclean

To be honest I don't trust using one single scanner either. I would much rather download the app and scan it with multiple scanners before it installs. This is exactly what I do on my Windows computer.

I found out a long time ago that an anti-malware program can do more harm than good. 9/10 of the time I was spending my time chasing false positive detections. I also found out by purposely looking for malware that only a handful of scanners actually detected the malware when I uploaded it to virustotal.

A program like Lookout is better than nothing though. I'm just worried about how many resources it needs and if it is going to affect the smoothness of my N7.

Lookout does nothing to slow down the Nexus 7, at least that I've ever detected.

agreed with Hook, just didn't have time to post it first. not that being first mattered...

I've used on my N7 and Maxx HD without hiccup. I didn't use them before, and it's never really "saved" me from anything, but better to be safe. And it has the "Flare" or whatever so you can located a lost/stolen device. It's free, but there are some paid advanced features.

My personal choice: android malware is few and far between.

Stay with reputable app stores and reputable developers/apps and you'll be fine.

Bonus points for reading reviews and checking permissions.
