Biggest Dissapointment with Kindle Fire

PalmPilot

Newbie
I would like bluetooth and an sd slot, but for me, the biggest disappointment is the lack of Gmail and Google Maps...I'm a HUGE Kindle/Amazon fan, but I gotta say, that's a let down.

The built-in mail app will handle gmail (it will also combine multiple email accounts into one mailbox), or you could access gmail through the browser.
I guess you can access Google maps through the browser as well, but there's no app for it (and no gps, anyway, either).

I hate the bookshelf thing, and the fact that I can't see a true list of the apps I have installed (like Superuser) I mean there are other things I dont like but I knew or suspected most of those going in.

I too think the main home should not be a shelf with a twitchy selector that seems to defeat me

My biggest gripes are:
1. no SD
2. No HDMI, silly for a device they expect to launch a video service with.

Except for Fire speed I like my Archos70 better.

I hate they you can not turn off 1 click for apps and books.
Now I have to hope my kid doesn't make a $100 bill for me.

I really hate the browser. It seems to render slowly and get hung and doesnt cache pages, so it sucks network resources just to go back one page.

Also the zoom in feature seems very limited.

I really hate that I could not find any browsers in the Amazon Appstore when I looked.

Of course they won't let you use another browser - if you did, they couldn't use Silk to monitor where you go.

I personally am not disappointed at all in my kindle fire except for one thing. I wish I had purchased the anti-glare screen protector that kindle fire sells. Instead I couldn't wait and bought the only one I could find at Walmart. It is a Nook screen protector but it fits perfectly but its clear and doesn't minimize the shininess of this screen. But I can live with this.

I am having a very fun time with it.

go to 4shared.com and download the apk for dolphin browser "or your browser of choice" install it add it to your favorites and enjoy.

AWESOME!

So does this mean that we can install anything. This just defeated downloading only from amazon store? What am I missing here? ?? The device is perfect!

If I could install swiftkey my life would be complete.

I don't know. I mean I guess you can try it and if it doesn't work you can just take it off. I put go launcher ex on mine but I took it off (it was working).

I only wanted to get different browser than Amazon's. Not keen on big brother looking over my shoulder at all times.

Battery life and sound at maximum volume leaves something to be desired.

The rest, I love it.

I have to agree.
Actually, I'm pleasantly surprised at how much you can accomplish with this thing without root. I'm running just about everything I'd like to. I'm very happy with it so far.

I tried out the Prime instant video streaming the other day, and I expected it to be laggy and buffer a lot (because my high speed Internet is pretty low-end), but it actually appeared to download the video very quickly, and then play it with no buffering. o_O I was shocked.

What I'm really disappointed with, though, has nothing to do with the Fire, itself, but Amazon's Prime video service. I'm actually a paying member of Prime, for the record; what I'd like to know is, why are most (if not all?) current running shows not free to watch? I'm already paying $40 for Prime (I'd be paying $80, if I weren't getting the student discount), so why do I have to pay $1.99 per episode to catch up with some shows that I missed the latest episode of?

Most of the time, this isn't a big deal, because a lot of the stuff is on Hulu, which is free. But there are some shows I like to watch that don't get added to Hulu until 8 days after they air, which is silly, because if I don't want to watch the next episode without having seen the one I missed, I end up getting stuck being behind with the series. It just seems to me that, if I'm paying for Amazon Prime, they should offer free viewing of new episodes for no extra charge. Why not try to compete with Hulu, in that regard? I'd think that would be a fairly nice way to sell Prime to people, on top of the other perks that come with it.

This is my sixth or seventh android device and take it from experience. Don't loss it up with too much tootle stuff. It will do nothing but slow down a seemingly vety fast device.

My last two tablets really slowed down after root. Overclocking isn't all that either.

The only thing that can slow it down is cache and running apps from what I can tell.

You can manage both of those through built in settings and also they have apps that will help you manage them.

Installing apps can't slow you down unless they are running. Rooting can't slow you down either. if anything it allows you to go faster as you can more finely manage your running apps, memory usage, etc. with superuser apps that can only be used on a rooted device.

Have to disagree. You might think you have control over what's running in the background, but you don't. Those processes that you think you kill just keep coming back.
Go ahead, root it, add gapps, overclock it.
I think turning it into just another android (iPad looking knock off) tablet ruins what this device was meant to be.
When I rooted the nook color, it just looked and felt awkward.

Just my opinion

Then flush your smartphone.:D

if you dont want to use Silk, you can download the Dolphin browser from getjar correct? I'll be getting my kindle fire in the mail tomorrow

So far there isn't much I'm dissapointed in, the only thing I didn't like was the carousel bookshelf, but I installed ex go launcher and voila. After I rooted it, it became perfect for me. All I needed on it was youtube and some other apps from the google market. Sure I could have side loaded them, but some weren't compatible unless I installed the google framework apk. Or at least I think so!

I'm not rooted, and I sideloaded both Youtube v2.2.14 and Tubemate v1.05.14, and they both work. And yes, you can install alternate browsers like Dolphin or Opera Mobile or Mini.

I downloaded dolphin hd from get jar but if I try to download the add-ons for dolphin it says its can not locate it on the amazon appstore anyway around that.
