Bionic qHD vs Samsung Super AMOLED + Displays?

Dunbar42

Newbie
I'm an iPhone 4 user looking to switch to a 4.3" Verizon Android phone. I love the retina display so I was limiting my choices only to the highest resolution phones (currently 960x540) hence the preference for the Droid Bionic. Then I saw the upcoming Samsung Stealth V has a 4.3" Super AMOLED + screen but it's only 800x480 resolution. Any input on what best screen would be for web browsing and e-mail?

Uh... you want a high resolution phone for email and web browsing?

Don't quote me on this, but I think the battery life may be about the same. The bionic will have more power, but you may not need that. It will probably be more expensive too. They are both 4g.

If all you are looking for is a higher resolution, Bionic may be right, but not saying it is better for you.

Yes, I don't watch much video or game much on my phone but I do a lot of browsing, RSS feeds, e-mail etc. The 960x640 retina display on the iphone 4 has really spoiled me. Still, it seems like the Super AMOLED+ may be a better option even though it runs at the lower 800x480 resolution. A lot of people are complaining that the qHD display in the Atrix isn't that sharp with its pentile pixel arrangement.

Unless you absolutely need dual core CPU power for certain games, I think new Samsung 4G LTE with super AMOLED plus display is better for you. Super AMOLED plus has square RGB pixel structure, so it addressed the text sharpness issues previous Super AMOLED while retaining all the good characters of Super AMOLED display. Also it's big question mark on how the battery life would play out with dual core plus 4G LTE combo in Bionic.

Dual cores usually save battery life, as people keep saying around here. However, 4G will definitely drain it, but how bad compared to 3G?

There's several Samsung phones with the Super AMOLED+ screen that appeal to me. The Galaxy S2 (4.3" screen) and Infuse (4.5" screen) look a lot sleeker than the Stealth V (at least the version shown at CES.) But no word yet on if a version of the S2 and Infuse will make it to Verizon. Some people think the production Stealth V will look more like the Galaxy S2.

I prefer the AMOLED screens over any kind of LCD no matter the resolution. The viewing angles are so much better, the colors have so much more contrast so they really pop, and the response time is significantly better.

I'm not that crazy about physical buttons - I'd rather have them be touch as well. Just seems like it's something else to break or pop off.

Any word on a release date for either phone being soon. I'm eligible for an upgrade and im leaning towards the Thunderbolt but i don't want to be left behind with a single core processor if the dual core phones are coming out soon. I'm very anxious to get a new phone because my DROID 1 has been stolen and im stuck with a LG Voyager.

They're not being more specific than Q2 but I'm not expecting them before May (the Samsung and Bionic that is.) I would get the Thunderbolt if I needed a phone now.

Aren't they harder to see in the bright light outdoors? Just asking as I have never seen one outside, just heard on forums.

I've owned the iPhone 4, Captivate, N1, and now the Atrix.

"Retina Display" (i4): Great resolution, colors are pretty accurate. Easy to see in sunlight.

AMOLED (N1) was really washed out and hard to see in the sunlight. Worst of the bunch.

Super AMOLED (captivate)'s colors were over saturated, and the battery sucks on it unless youre viewing mainly black images/objects. Note: Websites will DRAIN the battery as most are bright/white. Somewhat hard to see in sunlight

"qHD" (Atrix): even with the pentile arrangement, I think it looks fine. The whites are actually white. I have zoomed up extremely close and I cannot notice anything getting overly pixelated at reading distance. The only downside of the Atrix's display are that the yellows look brownish. Was fine in sunlight

Yep, significantly harder. I never had a real problem by looking at it in my own shadow or the shadow of a building however.

So is qHD noticeably sharper than 800x480?

its not a huge leap like it was from 320x480 (iPhone2-3gs) to say something like qHD or retina display. A lot more things can definitely be displayed on the screen, youll notice 2 or so more emails over 800x480.

But you haven't seen Super AMOLED plus in Stealth, SGS2. Have you? Since it's got square RGB pixels, I bet it's crisper than Super AMOLED and might even look better than qHD in Atrix/Bionic with pentile pixels.

That's why you do not see me walking around with my old Captivate anymore.

Samsung lost my trust with their whole Galaxy S line. I had the captivate and they promised 2.2 by the end of summer. When did we get it? End of feb 2011... Not to mention their quality testing SUCKS. How the hell do you ship out millions of phones without a working GPS chip?

Instead of fixing problems on their current phones, they release new phones with a few upgrades in hopes that people forget.

Forget... or give up and buy one of their new phones. I don't own a Samsung phone, but the horror stories I've read will ensure I will never buy one.

I own a Fascinate, and as far as droid phones go I've owned a Droid X, an Eris, and extensively tested the Incredible and the EVO. I've only been able to see an Atrix for mere moments, and it was only indoors. Sadly no screen impressions yet ...

I don't know about the above poster with the captivate, but I find the Fascinate still legible even in direct sunlight, at least more legible than the Droid X ever was. The screen is extremely punchy, and even if it's brightness rating isn't as high as the superLCD screens, the contrast to a true, deep black more than makes up for it. There's more to readability than just bright whites alone. I always have my light sensor on, so it auto adjusts. I never struggle to read it indoors or outdoors, and I use it a lot. In fact, its readability outside is one of the reasons I traded the Droid X in for the Fascinate, among others.

In the six months I've had it, it's been sort of a love/hate relationship. Now I must add that it's been 95% love and only 5% hate, but the 5% I hate about it is ASININE and doesn't make any sense.

Can't make bluetooth calls when your car stereo is using it to play music via headphone jack? GPS issues for TONS of users? (I was fortunate to get a working GPS from the get-go. I've scarcely had issues with the GPS, regardless of OS, Kernel, ROM, or build) The calendar, contact and account management issues on 2.1 are preposterous at best - this they improved substantially in the 2.2.1 that's not officially out yet.

Other than that, it's been 95% love. The audio quality when using as an MP3 player is excellent. Put some nice headphones on and it really sounds wonderful - absolutely as good as any Apple, Sandisk, etc. music playback device I've ever owned.

The Fascinate (and other galaxy S phones) was second only to Apple's iPhone 4 for a LONG time in camera quality for both pics and video, especially in low light. I'm pleased to say, HTC has now tied the Fascinate (other than the pathetic flash) for quality of camera. Videos are crisp, clear, and surprisingly artifact free on the Thunderbolt. The Fascinate has served me well though, and continues to take impressive pics and vids. And I didn't need to get an iPhone to do it.

The Droid X had the best reception of any phone I've ever owned/tested in my life. The thing is like a land line. But the Fascinate, at least for me, is no slouch. Mine consistently passes the "Eagle Pass" test in Wyoming. Hasn't dropped a call yet. Folks with new cellphones continue to drop calls at Eagle Pass, but no the Fascinate. I even get good reception in my basement, which is another fairly weak signal area.

Believe it or not, if configured properly, the Fascinate is a battery life CHAMP. That's right. You are reading correctly. When I was using an undervolted custom kernel and night mode in any apps that support it (such as eReaders, etc.) I could get TWO DAYS of good use on my Fascinate. Even with the 2.2 leak, I am always able to get through a day with frequent use on my phone, including calls, lots of texting, internet, and gaming of course.

The form factor and weight of the Fascinate are also stellar. It's much more ergonomic than the Droid X, and less bulky than the TB.

Samsung has dropped the ball on 2.2 updates. And Verizon going skippy-doo-dah all over Apple is causing them to neglect other phones a bit. And while my GPS has always been just fine, I have read way more reports than I would like.

I wish I could recommend a perfect device, but I have high hopes for the Stealth, the LG Revolution, and the Bionic to all be excellent devices. I would not recommend the TB right at the moment. Too much is missing - battery life, HDMI out, dual core if you need it. And they've gone and done the non-HTC nasty: used a locked bootloader. Even if Samsung is not the greatest for software updates (partially because of Verizon's current Apple lust...) they still make impressive hardware, and with the popularity of the devices, the root/mod crowd is certainly having a great time making cool stuff for this device. It's not locked up like a motorola or the TB apparently. I mean, technically, the Galaxy S series does have locked bootloaders, but it's like the most wimpy lock ever...

Tough choice. I got a line coming up for upgrade in April, so I'm in the same boat. I'm pretty sure I want something with HDMI, and I've read rumors that the Stealth will actually have it. If it has SuperAMOLED plus, HDMI out, AND a dual core?? Even with Samsung's spotty software support history, that is going to be a tough device for me to pass up...

Don't do it man. Spotty software support AND QC. Their GPS sucks on their phones.

For me to upgrade ill look for:

Dual core
4" QHD display (larger drains battery too much)
2 gb ram
Minimum 8 gb internal space
20 hours or better battery with moderate use
Gingerbread out of the box

With a marginal possibility of the Bionic if they crack the bootloader.

Im waiting for the MSM8960 chipset or Tegra 2 with LTE.
