Bird Watchers

Because our house has extended eaves, the downspouts have an s-curve attachment at the gutter. This is the perfect sheltered spot for our annual crop of house sparrows to build their nests.

I'm cool with that except for the fact that their scritching and flittering against the side of the house in the back room drive the dogs bat%^&#% CRAZY!
 
For the past week or a tad longer I've had a HUGE flock of mixed blackbirds (Grackles, Red-winged and Cowbirds) eating everything in sight. I don't mind, they are cleaning up the big mess the smaller birds make under the feeders. Besides, it's pretty cool when 50+ birds are blanketing the yard.

We have a Northern Flicker. There is a flicker house for them to nest in - they can be noisy. During breeding season they seem to prefer gutters and chimney caps to drum on.
 
I have a black truck with tinted windows. This will be it's third summer to be parked in my drive. The first two summers... no problems at all. This summer I have a pair of Robins that have fallen in love and sit daily on my truck and gawk at one another in the tinted windows. Their daily deposits on my black truck is driving me crazy.
I have no idea why just this pair and why they love my truck so. I've spent a small fortune washing my truck and it's just now spring. I may have to invest in an owl to put in my truck. :)
 
It's supposed to rain tonight and tomorrow but I washed my truck again anyway. I'm sick of all the jokes about my stained truck. People stare at my truck in disbelief when we are sitting at a traffic light together or I pass them or they pass me on the freeway. It's not a small problem/deposit that I'm dealing with. I raised pidgeons

I did some googling on this. It seems to affect black cars more, and male robins checking themselves out in the mirrors. Some suggestions were to cover the car or the mirrors for a few weeks to break the habit.

If they are just sitting there, it could be a pair. 2 male robins would be fussing and feuding over territory. If one has a darker head than the other, it is probably a pair. The male's head appears black. Males also tend to attack the images.

Hopefully, they aren't considering your truck as a nesting site.

The strangest bird I've seen in Boston was Bright Yellow with some Black markings. No bigger than a sparrow and like...
laid out with his wings spread wide in a bush less than two blocks from my house. Bright colored birds are rare in Boston MA.

I got some house finches this week. Was excited for something new until I read up on them and they like to take over a feeder.

American Goldfinch. I like the Amish name - Distelfink. Thistle Finch
 
My apple tree is just starting to get leaves/buds, no migraters yet though. Well, I did see an Eastern Towhee the other day, he was purdy. Still waiting for the hummers and warblers et al. I won't get Bluebirds at my house but they are around the corner at the park so I'll take a walk over to see them.
