Bird Watchers

Nothing interesting or exotic lately. Typiical Boston fare; Pigeons, Sparrows, Seagulls, Crows and Grackles. The Grackles are kind of a recent arrival but they are everywhere in Boston.
Who invited them?

I have been hearing 'my' great horned owls for a while now, getting closer and closer. They usually nest right in the back woods and I see them occasionally on quick flyovers. They were just VERY loud so I snuck out to listen and saw 2 sitting on top of a tree that hangs over my back fence. Huge and beautiful. They flew off but will be back. Love them.

I have a Cherry tree in my front yard that for some reason has attracted the largest flock of bluebirds I have ever seen. It started with two, then a couple more, then a few more. Over the last 15 minutes or so I'm now up to ten of them on the tree. And these suckers are fat!!!!

I bought a 40 lb. bag of birdseed just after Thanksgiving and it already ran out. While the squirrels were digging in a little, we've had large flocks bellying up to the feeder. I attribute it to the sudden frigid conditions .... and yeah, they are plump little guys.

I wish bluebirds came to my yard, they are in the area but just don't visit me. Bad birds! I have to fill my feeder later today, stupid sparrows have flung all the seed out. I wait a while before filling it back up, let everyone eat all the seed from the ground first. I don't really mind the the sparrows come to feed, I do mind that they just throw seed all over for no reason. I have to punish the other birds by making them eat off the ground. UGH

The Bald Eagles have taken up residency at the cabin. There is two pair or perhaps a pair with two little ones. I thought they had a territory and did not share their space with another pair so it's likely a family. Man they are beautiful and majestic. And to hear their cry and screech is way cool! I so hope they stay. They seem to be hanging out in a huge tree across the river. I see no nest but I've spotted the four in that tree multiple times.

Small flock of Cedar Waxwings in juniper tree.
They are listed as a migrating bird, but they irrupt.
The Vulcan heard them perching on the gutters which is where they drink if no puddle.

You might see a flock of thousands(we did once)
a flock of 10 or more, and then not see any for a couple of years

How big is that bird? I swear I saw one but nobody could tell me what a yellow bird might be in Boston. It's been over a decade since I've seen a yellow bird in the wild um... urban landscape.
It was fanning it's feathers on top of a bush in a tiny front yard in front of a triple-decker.

That is a Yellow Cardinal. Genetic defect. I posted a pic of the yellow bird in our area. Its an American Goldfinch.

It's been a long while but the colors are right. I guess it was a Finch. That color is rare in my neighborhood though.
Check the page I linked. The yellow is muted in the winter. It's more of a yellow hue. They start really brightening up later in the spring.
