Help Bixby Voice prolonged CPU usage in idle

Hi,

During idle my phone suddenly got very hot, even more than regular gaming. It has happened twice, but this time I have the chance to check the app usage.

It turned out Bixby Voice got ahold of the phone radio and WIFI for over 2 hours, with the process called dexopt.

The phone lost 35% of battery in about 30 minutes or so. The first time it happened, I restarted the phone several times but it would just resume the mysterious activity. Eventually, I turned off the phone for an hour and it's gone. This time I did the same thing, turned off the phone at 65% battery power and recharge it back. After power up, the drain was no more.

The question: what is dexopt and what was it doing?

There are 2 meanings of "dex" in Android:

* Odex files (.dex) are part of a compiled android app

* Dex is Samsung's system for extending your phone display onto a larger screen (a pseudo desktop computer view).

I think the first is the answer here: an app optimisation service that got stuck in a loop for some reason. Why it should have happened I could only speculate though.

I would think so, too - it's some kind of optimizing process running while the phone is idle. Judging from your reply, I guess no one has ever had this problem before?

I've never seen it in 12 years of using Android. Apps going rogue happens occasionally, though I've never had anything this bad, but I've not seen this particular process go off the rails myself.

My mom's Sharp FS8009 also had similar problems, happened much earlier than mine. Sudden spike in temperature even though the phone is in idle. We factory reset that one many times to no avail, and I didn't reinstall the GSAM Battery Monitor. Sharp doesn't have Bixby Voice, so I'm not sure which process caused the temperature spike.
