Help Black Screen of Death?

I've had my Samsung Galaxy Mini for almost one week. I haven't rooted it or modified it at all. Yesterday after I received a phone call, the touch screen got completely black and unresponsive. The only thing it worked was to keep the power button pressed until the phone got restarted. This is the second time when this happens.
Can anybody tell me what is all about?
Thanks in advance

There is a proximity sensor in this phone(on the left of earpiece) which turns off the touch screen when an object is near it(only during calls).
You can re activate the touch screen by moving your mobile far away(atleast 1 feet) from your body.

Hi, I've got the same problem with my new Mini - the screen turns black when an in- or out-going call starts. It usually resumes when the call is over, but I can't make it light up during the call. On 2-3 occasions in the last month the screen stayed black after the call ended. I tried pressing the buttons, then pressing and holding, I held the phone at arm's length and even put it on the table, but nothing. Only holding the power button turned it off and on again. Am I doing something wrong?

There are many reasons for the such failure.
One of them is faulty firmware/driver .
You can use KIES/Odin to reinstall a firmware of your region and check again .

The second one is faulty proximity sensor .
In such cases it's usually advisable to go to samsung care and have it corrected .

You can use Hardware Disabler[Root privileges required] from Market to disable the proximity sensor .
But the app is volatile at times and may hang your phone .

Black Screen of death occurs in many different phones like Htc Hd2, droid, Samsung..(With Android Rom Mainly). It is not caused by hardware, software or battery issues but because of Android Rom and clash of few settings. The screen will be black and the lights will be lit up and screen won't wake up. The only temporary fix is pull the battery. Annoying as hell. But, screen of death continues. My Solution ( it works on HTC Hd2) go to settings> personal> display settings. Deselect automatic brightness(No auto brightness).Screen time out 1 Minutes (No 30 Sec). Animation medium. Apply Settings. Okay.Go to settings again. Settings>system> Wlan (wireless network) > advance settings > wlan sleep policy > select never. Apply settings. Okay. Restart Phone twice to apply settings and test your phone. :) you screen should not go blank. Optional install android assistant & battery monitor widget that might prevent screen of death in certain cases. Good Luck! :D

I have had my galaxy mini for a week and this problem has been driving me crazy. Think i have found my problem- the screen protector, which i assume sets off the proximity sensor hence the screen not coming back on.

Tried it in call with screen protector on and couldn't get back to normal screen. Took screen protector off and it was fine.

You can turn off the Proximity Sensor in Settings>Call settings>Additonal settings>Turn on proximity sensor*Uncheck this*
