Help black screen

phone is in mint condition and hasn't been droped/wet ever. I also always keep it in it's otter box. :( out of the blue I get the black screen today. was walked by verizon to do the volume down and power off switch.

Any other thoughts, tips or even hope to get this working or am I lost?

All I get is a black screen and the 4 'main' keys light up at the bottom. what is wrong w/my phone? any way to save it at all. So darn frusterated!!

Really, really appreciate your help. Just hate to get a new phone because I want to mainined my 'grandfathered' status of unlimted data w/verizon.

Hello sugar&spice.

Your phone could be defective.. but it may be something as mundane as the proximity sensor being blocked by dirt, head and/or hair oil/sweat, etc. That's the sensor that detects when the phone is being used for a call and is near your face/head/ear so the screen will go black and disallow any icons being activated as you talk on the phone. The screen re-appears once the sensors see that you've moved the device clear of any obstruction.

That sensor is a small area beneath the glass at the top 3/8the of an inch or so of your device. Just wipe the area thoroughly with a soft cloth over and over again for ten seconds or so... put a little rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab if you want it; that won't hurt anything and evaporates quickly.

not quite sure where you're saying the sensor is. Can you please be more specific? do I have to take the phone apart?

appreciate your help! thanks again.

ETA: is it bad that I also recently added a 4 digit lock code on it? uggh it's so frusterating. the 4 home keys at the bottom of the phone all light up :(
