Hello and welcome aboard. Good question _ and the short answer is "yes" - it's normal behavior for the phone screen to goes off when your face covers the Proximity Sensor -then comes back on when remove ( A proximity sensor is a sensor able to detect the presence of nearby objects without any physical contact. ....).
