Root Bloatware read file only error

Rooted my phone using ginger break, confirmed root success and busy box installation with root check or whatever. Also, connectbot confirms with $-# whoami whoami uid blah blahstuff. Pretty sure of root.
using connectbot entered:
Ls /system/app
This provided a list of apps. Then tried
Rm /system/app/nameofapp.apk
And recieved a read file only error.
Aside from buying the file manager app, what can i do?

Ps!
tried titanium backup, can't get a list of apps to appear under backup/restore
