Help Blocked from installing program not from market

wordswork

Newbie
I have an Xperia X10 running the latest software version, which I think is 2.1.

I need to know how to install non-Android market software. I have an APK for the previous version of Agenda Widget 1.5.9 and each time I try to install it, I get a message saying the install has been blocked because it didn't come from the market.

I've tried changing my development settings to USB debugging, but that doesn't seem to help.

Does anyone know a work-around for this? I mean, besides rooting the phone, which I don’t want to do.

Thanks.

You can try the following

go into your settings
select applications
and there should be a option right at the top of the list that say Unkown Sources. Check the check box and that should work

hope this helps

Thanks, but I don't have that option in my applications menu. I only have:

manage applications - which is just a list of all applications on my phone
running services - to view and control currently running services
development - to set options for application development.

I thought the last one might do the trick because it has a selection for usb debugging that you can use to copy data between phone and computer, install applications without notification and read log data.

But when I connected my phone to my computer via the usb cable and tried to download the APK again, it was still blocked.

More suggestions would be welcome.

I'm wondering if this has anything to do with some kind of certificate I need to download. When I go to location & security settings and choose, "install from SD card," I get a message that says, "no .p12 file found in the SD card."

I think I might be able to install the program if I have this .p12 file.

Any idea how I can get one?

I've downloaded a couple of apps from the market, but neither of them did the trick.

AT&T modified the firmware so that you cannot install applications outside of the market. Your only option is to debrand your phone.

Let me know if you need directions.

The easiest thing would be to flash a generic X10a ROM.

You can always search online for a generic X10a ROM (or download thiso one: MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service) and the Flash Tool ([TOOL] [UPDATE 29/07/2011] Flashtool BETA version 0.2.9.1 (Added 2.3.3 ftf) - xda-developers).

If your phone is rooted, just edit the system/build.prop file with an app called "Root Explorer", it's not free but it's cheap.

When you see 12##-#### (don't know which number AT&T uses) replace it with one of those (I think it's there 3 times, maybe 2):

1237-1014
1234-4836
1234-4820

Which are respectively for Argentina, Brazil and Generic Latin.

Then repair the phone with SEUS or PC Companion and it will install the generic software.

And the good thing is that eventually you'll be upgraded to Android 2.3.3 (Gingerbread) instead of being stuck with 2.1 like the AT&T branded phones.

In what country are you in? Saudi Arabia?

You could always try to create a new GMAIL account from the web and put a address in the US or in another country, and login with this address. Not sure if that is the problem...
