Blocking Data on Android

I'm going to be purchasing my first Android phone, specifically a Motorola Atrix. The problem is AT&T is very anal about needing a data plan with all smart phones that are used with them, and instead of getting an extra $25 a month thrown on my already high bill, I was wondering if the OS gives you an option to disable data completely. If not, would jailbreaking it do the trick?

You can just turn off 3g data and only use wifi when available. However, i'm almost positive you still have to pay for a data plan no matter what.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. However, would perhaps unlocking the phone work, as I hear AT&T cannot see unlocked phones and thus, charge for a data plan?
 
If you got your phone unsubsidized (full $500), AT&T can't charge you for data. If you're getting your Atrix subsidized (free atm), then you're required to sign up for a data plan. I believe you can get 200mb for $15 with their tier data plans.

Where did you get that about unsubsidized phones? I'd love to have the info.

On TMO, my voice only user can use a BB Pearl or the Samsung Galaxy 3 with no data plan if his current phone quits. He doesn't even know how to text and he'll keep that Nokia 6086 until it dies. Just for grins I checked with ATT and since one is a BB and the other a smartphone, I have to have a data plan.

I prefer GSM and prefer to buy unlocked phones anyway.
 
hey, I downloaded apndroid and disabled 2g/3g data and then deleted the app by mistake a few days later without enabling the data again... now i cant turn it back on as the app is gone... anyone help me? have a SS Galaxy 2....

Have you tried installing it again to enable the data option?
