Is there anyway to block incoming texts from numbers on this phone?

It would depend on which app you use for messages. In Google's messages app, you open the app, click on settings, select 'blocked contacts' and then add any numbers you want to block.

Some carriers also let you block texts. For example if you have Sprint you can send a text to 9999 with the message "block <number>" which would look like:

block 1234567890

Would assigning a number as Spam work the same way?

Metro has Name ID (under Protection) for $2 a month to block calls:

Doesn't mention texts though.

My phone doesn't have the option to mark a number as spam, but I'd guess that number would then be ignored.
