Blocking Spam SMS Text Message and not pay for it

So I have the Fascinate through Verizon and it's my first smartphone. I do not have a text plan. I never had spam texts in the past and now I get them everyday with this new phone and it kills me to be paying for them. I've downloaded the Blacklist app to block them but wondering if I will still be paying for them or does this application also make it so you never pay for the spam messages coming in or see them. Maybe there other apps that are better?

And just to blow some steam the entire idea of paying for text messaging just baffles me. We can watch videos, post on facebook, send emails, shoot streaming video, etc. under the data plan but to send a small 30 character text message we have to have a text plan or pay .20 cents and that's NOT a part of the data plan. Such a scam and people except it and pay it and Verizon practically begs you to sign up for it and throws out the emergency and safety card at you. What a joke. Anyhow my original question above is what I am after.

use GV...free
I use TMobile and I told them to block all text messages into my tmobile phone. I just use GV to send and receive texts now.

Do people need to send to a google voice number or do they send to your regular cell number and it gets forwarded through google voice? I don't want to have to give out a separate phone number just for text messaging. Thanks for your quick response.

the app blocks your phone from notifying you oaf a new text. The text still comes to your phone from the network, so therefore you are still charged for them.

My advice, reply STOP to the texts, that should stop them. If not, contact your carrier, explain your situation, and see if they can either block them from their end, or not charge you for texts coming from those numbers.

I just spoke w/T-Mobile customer care, and they told me that they're trying to work out a solution. Of course, the agent didn't seem to be tech-savvy enough to give me much concerning details, but she credited me with 20 extra texts, (I'm on a limited plan) while they attempt to work things out...

The real and only solution is to stop the sender from sending you the messages and that is the only path you should be taking as no app can stop you from being charged by blocking these texts.

The only GV feature you can use without having contacts use your GV number is voicemail. You could just switch to the GV number. That's what I did anyway. No reason IMO not to have all GV features for all calls.
