bluetooth always on?

....

Instructions
Just drag the app icon to wherever you want it and launch the app and it will ask if you want to enable discoverability for 300 seconds, then the app will close itself. Pretty simple really. Even tossed a nice little icon in there heh. Unfortunately it has to prompt you as there is no other way to enable discoverability sans rooting. ...

Great little app, thanks a lot! I thought the problem was just with my head unit (Pioneer) as it does have BT issues (needs a hardware fix to sort properly - I'll just get a HU with BT streaming when I have the cash!) but as a) basic Nokias would pair fine then b) the wife got a Wildfire s and found that would pair automatically as long as the phone was discoverable thought the problem was a little more than that.

Tried your app and now everything is hunky dory! As a bonus it's very simple so the wife won't get confused as to which buttons to press!!

Thanks again.

Dave

as for this being a supposed security risk, on my nokia n900 (this phone's predecessor) i had an "always discoverable" connection and never once fond it to be a risk.

When I was living in London a few years back I forgot I'd left my BT on after doing a file share earlier that day with a colleague; I got "phone" harassed in pub later that evening under the guise of "toothing".... the sender was able to work out who I was from my reaction (of disgust) to the foul messages he had sent me. I was unaware and just switched off my BT; he followed me out of the bar as I was leaving and tried to grope me. Luckily enough I was able to cope with the situation but it certainly made me aware of the security risks of BT.

Bluetooth (on Android) will ALWAYS show you a "pairing" dialog with a 5 digit number that you must accept or decline, usually within 10-ish seconds, or it will fail. "toothing" was also largely considered to be a hoax.

So I'm a bit skeptical of your story. :) Anyways, no offense meant -- just not sure what type of phone you mean. it's possible this happened pre Android, but not with Android.

Bluetooth (on Android)

I never said it was an android phone (it was on a Nokia); I was commenting in general on safety and Bluetooth... and "toothing" was definitely not a hoax as I found to my cost.... so you can shove your "skepticism"....

Sorry, I assumed being on an Android forum we're talking Android. But like I said, I meant no offense.

Regardless, these security risks dont exist on Android. If it was a Nokia phone that you were using, that might have been worth mentioning :).

It's worth pointing out to Android users that your story isn't something they need to worry about. It's one of the more secure methods of communication on Android.

Anyways, it really was (originally) a hoax:

Toothing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Toothing was originally a hoax claim that Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones or PDAs were being used to arrange random sexual encounters, perpetrated as a prank on the media who reported it.

Still, I appologize for doubting your story -- it's not my place to judge one way or the other.

But seeing as how:

1) It wasnt possible on Android
2) No metion was made of a different phone
3) It was about something that was originally a hoax to fool the media

I hope you can see why it's reasonable for me to doubt the legitimacy.

I do however want to clear up the record about Android as is my place here. To provide the info as best I can and guide people about the use of their Android phones.

Also as a remider, we ask users here to please be respectful of others and I'd remind you to do the same.

Cheers

Very good APK from alostpacket, how can I chance the time from 300 to 0 Alostpacket? I guess if you specify the time limit to 0 it will be always discoverable. I do really need this because my car stereo only finds my cell phone when It's in discoverable mode. Could you do this change on your Bluetooth Discoverable APK? Thanks a lot for your help.http://androidforums.com/members/alostpacket.html
