Bluetooth Dial-Up Networking Service (DUN) for Droid Eris

I have a Droid Eris on Verizon and a Windows acer laptop running windows 7. I also have a bluetooth adapter by jWIN (JB-TH101). I was wondering if and how i could pair my phone with the computer and have the computer go through the phone and use my phones internet network. So far i have paired my phone but my phone dosnt seem to let the program through to use the internet. How can i fix this?
 
You will need to go into Marketplace and download either PDA Net or EasyTether. You will need the usb cable to connect your phone to the computer. Both have a trial period and then they will block https (secure site's such as ones you log in to get on facebook or your bank account) then you will need to pay $29.99 for PDA Net or $9.99 for Easytether...I think I'd go with the cheaper app. Follow the instructions for each app when you download them. Come back here if you get stuck.
 
PDANet does have bluetooth tethering (DUN) but Android 1.5 doesn't support it or bluetooth file transfer for that matter. Android 2.1 is supposed to support both of these. Just have to wait till the OTA to see if it does or maybe someone who has downloaded the leak can tell you. PDANet has worked well through the USB cable for me as I occasionally use it when we lose our internet connection at work.
 
Be very careful when you tether, VZW can charge you for the mobile broadband plan. That plan is capped at 5GB and could cost you an extra 59.99.
 
I've tethered for well over 5GB (playing WoW), and have never been charged over. You are fine.
 
The unlimited plan for the smartphones isn't capped it is as the name implies unlimited data. And Verizon has no way of telling how you are using that access as far as I have been able to find out. You connect using the phones ip address no matter how it is connected.

As to the legality of using PDANet that hasn't been answered and most if not all who have used it in this forum report no problems using it and no charges from verizon. That is as long as you don't connect to it for long periods of time. Checking email is okay but I wouldn't use it as my home broadband connection.
 
Thanks everyone. I think im just going to use easy tether in usb. It's ok cause i have unlimited data. Jut one last thing. How is the speed when you usb tether?
 
I have found it to be comparable to a medium speed dsl line though I've not speed tested it.
 
Hi again. I downloaded easy tether ok both phone and computer.my phone is plugged in and the add is open. When I click connect via android in the easy tether menu, nothong happens. Anyone else have this problem?. I'd so how did u fix it?
 
Hi I am new to this forum and have limited understanding of the terms and concepts, but I catch on readily. I live in the woods. I have dialup internet when the landline is working it is my desire to ditch the landline company who has all but abandoned us except to take our $70 monthly for virtually no service. They were even charging us an additional $30 for dialup till we discovered that we could simply get it free by dialing a local free dialup service. I recently got a signal booster from wilson electronics which amplifies a faint phone signal allowing us to get maybe 2 bars in the house. This allows phone calls but rarely lets our android phone online because we dont always have 3g. So what I would like to do in essence is to use the phone as a modem (if such an application exists) to contact the free dialup service and use the hotspot feature on the (verizon, motorolla, bionic) phone as a wifi even if it is a slow connection. I am cruising at about 24k as I type now on dialup albeit not ideal, an equal speed would suffice if possible via android. The signal strength in the house averages around -85db.

If I had to take a guess, its not going to be much better, if not worse if it would even work at all. Digital cell phones compress your voice to reduce the amount bandwidth used (it think its somewhere in the single digit kb/s). Along with that compression, they eliminate all sound that isn't likely to be a human voice (which is why you sound much worse over a cell phone than you do over a landline). Not to mention it can drop intermittently (which CANNOT happen for reliable digital transmission that expects NO error). Your landline voice connection excels in every way to a cell phone voice connection when it comes to transferring digital data quickly and reliably.

In other words, the cell phone system would probably filter out the dial up signal if not render it completely unreliable and far far slower than your current dial up. Cell phone voice services are really only good for voice.

Decent idea, its just not going to happen.

My alternate idea was that you could get satellite internet which is leagues faster than dial-up and would probably be cheaper or about as expensive as the landline. Granted, that requires you to have a clear view of the southern sky and since you say you're in the woods, that might not be feasible, short of getting out the chainsaw. :D
