Bluetooth tether an Android phone and Android tablet

Quick question: Is there anyway to tether an Android phone to an Andoid tablet?

I'd like to use my Moto Droid's 3G on a Samsung Galazy Tab the same way I can use PDAnet to use Bluetooth DUN on my netbook out through my Droid.

(I know I could use WIFI tether/hotspot but I'd have to root for that so I'd rather use bluetooth if possible.)

This is a HOW-TO guide that details how to bluetooth tether your Android phone's internet to your Motorola XOOM without using any applications or rooting your phone. If done properly you should have your Android phone and XOOM connected via bluetooth and the XOOM should be using your Android phone's internet.

Please post if it works for you, and also say what phone you are using.

Devices confirmed to work:
Droid 2 (Regular, R2D2, and Global)
Droid X
Droid Pro


This has been confirmed working on a few different devices now, it allows you to share your phone's internet with your XOOM without rooting your phone or needing any extra applications


1: on XOOM, go to settings>wireless & networks>tethering and portable hotspot and make sure that "Bluetooth Tethering" is UNCHECKED, this is NOT what we want

2: on XOOM, go to settings>wireless & networks> enable airplane mode

3: on XOOM, go to settings>wireless & networks> enable bluetooth

4: on your android phone, go to settings>wireless & networks (or equivalent)> enable bluetooth

5: Make sure that both devices are discoverable, so that they can see one another, should be in settings>wireless & networks>bluetooth settings

6: on XOOM, go to settings>wireless & networks>bluetooth settings>select your phone in order to pair it with your XOOM

7: a box should pop up on both devices, select Pair on both devices

8: on XOOM, once the pairing is complete (still inside bluetooth settings), select the phone, it should say paired but not connected underneath it

9: The two devices should connect, once connected there should be a wrench next to the connected device, clicking on this will show an option to tether, click this option if it is not automatically enabled

10: TA-DA, if it worked then in the bottom right hand corner of your XOOM should have two bluetooth icons, one should indicated that your bluetooth is turned on and the other should say bluetooth tethered, you are now using your phones internet data plan on your XOOM, aka not counting towards your xoom's data plan
 
I have been trying to tether my Motorola Android Milestone with my Viewsonic g-tablet (Android Operating System), and when trying to tether/connect, the Bluetooth settings say 'Paired but not connected.'

I have the Motorola Android Milestone 2 (Model No. A854), and don't have the 'tethering and portable hotspot' feature under wireless & networks, like the X and other models. Alltel says the hotspot feature should be part of a Milestone system update due to be released within the next few months.

I've had my phone 7 months, and already find myself being out of date. Bummer!
 
Is there a way to do this for phone calls?

Basically using the tablet as a headset?

if so... it would make a killer satnav stereo for a car.

no bluetooth integration is the only thing holding me back from doing an android tablet car-computer.
 
I have done the above steps and my tablet is hung up in connecting mode, but the wrench disappeared and nothing is happening.
 
I think its better if you can tethering with USB cable because of bluetooth connection tool slow. If you have high speed internet connection then this tethering not success.

Now there's apps for Automatically tether USB cable. Its called "Auto USB Tethering

Tried this with motorola droid and acer iconia tablet, didn't work!

I tried a BUNCH of apps and techniques, and none of them worked (it seems the Bionic has had its "hotspot" stuff poisoned or something). However, this worked great.

Title sounds like a Star Trek episode...but it's true. I followed the instructions in this thread, and within moments my Motorola Photon and Asus Transformer are tethered, and the Transformer is using the Photon's internet without issue.
 
I have being looking for a way to tether my new Toshiba AT100 to my HTC desire phone, found this thread at last, took more time to register so I could say thanks then it did to setup wireless hotspot and get on line:)

:)Thank you, this works wonderfully. I followed your instructions (not exactly at first :)) but it works! I tethered my ASUS Slider to my Droid 3 and I'm there! The Slider is Android 3.2.1 and the Droid 3 is Android 2.3.4. I just hope the big V doesn't figure this out and block it. Am I going to see it on my next bill?

I just made this work on the Xoom running 3.2.1 with the Droid 3. Biggest mistake I was making was to enable tether to the internet on the Xoom. Do not do this and it will work fine.
 
I tried this method today with my Droid x2 and my Asus Transformer. It worked like a charm. I would offer you my first-born child, but he's already married. :)
 
I have read all of these posts on how to tether my droid bionic to my xoom tablet and I just cannot get it to work. I copied every step
down in a notebook so I was sure to do it right. I cannot get any part of step number 9 to appear on the screens. I can get the phone in the tablet to pair and then nothing else. I am new to this forum and so I'm not sure which information to include. I have already returned a toshiba thrive because I could not get that to work. And this motorola xoom appears to be exactly the same tablet. Under step number 1 I also do not seem to have a box to check or uncheck bluetooth tethering. Any help would be greatly appreciated because I'm about to take this tablet back also.
 
I can get my smartphone and my tablet paired via Bluetooth, but they never connect. Is there a way to force them to connect?

Great post! I have a droid bionic and asus transformer - get all the way to the end and it connects but I cant seem to get an internet connection...... Any ideas?

Anybody know why my asus transformer doesnt have the option to tether when I click the wrench - I only got 'rename device' and 'unpair'??

The latest update for Andriod on Sprint has disabled tethering via Bluetooth AND USB!!!

All of the Apps that can tether have been removed from the App store. (Way to cave in there, Google.)

Neither can you download and install an App to your phone that will circumvent the phone's settings. As soon as I found a way to actually download PdaNET to my EVO, as I installed it, it immediately uninstalled. Same thing with AutoTether.

What really infuriates me is that I am paying a hefty price for a phone plan that SUPPOSIDLY included UNLIMITED Data! And, because I have a "smartphone" (who wouldn't on that plan?) I have to pay an additional $10/mn. So I'm already PAYING for "unlimited" Data.

What good is paying for "unlimited" data if Sprint won't let you USE it?!?!? No, they want us to pay stupid prices for a "hotspot" plan! $35/mn for 3gb?!?? $80/mn for 12gb? Are they on crack? Are they that hard up for cash these days?

Don't tell me I have "unlimited" data if, as soon as I want to USE it, you tell me I have to pay you an additional arm-and-a-leg per month! F'ING LIARS!
 
I have a Samsung charge through Verizon wireless. I would like to tether to my iconia a500. I tried the above and thought it was going to work until I clicked on the wrech. It doesn't have the tether option. It only has rename and unpair. I could not connect no matter what. Any ideas?
