If you buy it buy it for the software it has now, it's a great device hardware wise and you can do much worse software wise. But if you like rooting and installing custom roms there's really not much of a dev community for that on this device.

You could always get the Motorola XPRT from Boost for $75 its a power packed qwerty device. Cheapest in its class of hardware.

Just checked out some reviews and the device is awesome for the price. Too bad the keyboard is too cramped for me. I work at a boost mobile store and the device's keyboard simply sucks. Its positioned too far down. Lastly as far as updates. Android 4.1 is needed for me because of project butter !
As for the design 4g, Im going to hold off until I can afford it. I always tell myself to back off when I'm reaching impulse buying territory. Problem is, im paying for my college semesters. I have enough money for a semester but I must keep saving for my remaining 4 semesters until I go to a university. In which case I must save all that I can until I go to uni.
I might be a teen but I have to responsible with my money now

Just got the Design today at a local Bestbuy, they matched the websites sale price for 225.00 got it and didnt have to wait ... I was on Tmo with the MyTouch LG (nice phone but the Design just feels like an all around better phone) Tmo in my area is only EDGE network (20 plus miles away before 4G) with dial up speeds and with this I get 10 times as fast on EVDO so its all good.
