Hi everyone,

Just jumped ship from Samsung Transfer Ultra to Galaxy S3, it's like a breath of fresh air love the phone! Anyways just have some questions. Fresh out of the box since yesterday. I installed towelroot in order to get rooted easily. Checked it with root checker all is good. From my understanding in order to install PhilZ-Touch Recovery, gotta have CWM first then I can install Phill. Is this that incorrect? But when I tried following guide on here for CWM wasn't even able to do that first. In one of the steps from this site it says install CWM File for specific version search CWM site and don't see any for are model. So I confused? Thought maybe I was wrong and I could install just PhilZ-touch Recovery. Not having any luck with that :( I just wanna get recovery up and rock these nice roms already! Please help point me in the right direction and will be much appreciated :) Sorry newb as title says lol. Thanks!

Welcome to this great forum. I've only rooted a few phones myself. You don't have to install CWM prior to flashing Philz touch. Just Odin the latest d2lte tar. I compiled a step by step guide which is located near the bottom of this page in a subthread titled Kitkat ND8 Update. The step by step guide is at the very bottom of the last page. This is how I was taught to root our s3. You might want to give it a read.

Welcome to the S3 section.

I used Odin to flash the Philz recovery d2lte tar. Trust me. You will want to use Philz as your recovery.

There is also a new way to flash Philz without using Odin. It's an app called Flashify. People are saying it's a quick and easy way to flash a recovery.

Tried Flashify and fellowed guide. Wasn't able to get that going. Probably due to me being a newb lol. Waiting for someone to respond far as step by step process on how to install it with odin.

I followed the 'PhilZ CWM Recovery - Dummies Guide' which can be found HERE
I think it was actually written for the S4 but the steps worked just fine with my S3; if you want to be doubly sure then just post your question(s) there and the thread author or someone else who knows will, I'm sure, help you out.

Do you already have the Philz .tar file? If not you can download it from HERE; just make sure you download the correct version for your model of handset. If you scroll down further you'll find a step-by-step guide to installing as well.

Have you found Samsung Galaxy S3: All Things Root Guide yet? I found all of the above there as well as a whole bunch of other helpful stuff.

Thanks everyone good to go! Will tell other people about this great site. I got 5 other people who wanted it done so you helped them as well thanks!

Thanks man that helped a lot! Gotta it running because of you :) Thanks!

Glad I could help.

I've only been using Android for a few months myself and this forum has helped me no end; it's nice to have the opportunity to point someone else in the right direction.

Now you've got PhilZ installed make yourself a Nandroid backup before you do anything else. Once that's done you can fiddle about with your phone safe in the knowledge that if you run into difficulties you can always restore your phone back to the way it is now and start all over again!

Have fun.

Make sure if you are on the newest update (kit kat) that you do not try to flash any older modems they will possibly brick your phone. And if you are on the newest update some of the older ROMs may work and may not with that modem. Just make sure you read the ROM thread or any of the threads that you are going to try and follow their directions.

Thanks man! Yeah installed everything working great. Love this wicked rom!

Any other modem besides NDC or ND8 while on the 4.4.2 KitKat bootloader will most definitely brick the phone. Quite a few people bricked their phones over at XDA trying to use the new modem on the older bootloaders.

The Sprint ND8 modem can in fact be ran on the Boost NDC bootloader and vice versa but the phone must be running a custom ROM. If not the phone's data will not work. ;)

Yeah, nandroid is the complete backup you do from recovery. Now you've got that save a copy on your 'puter just in case.

I'm a fan of NeatROM of which there are two flavours; a TW based and an AOSP based.

Just a quick note. . The NEATROM link in the prior post looks like it is for the international S3. Do not try and install this on a L710. It will probably brick your phone.

Maybe there is a version for Sprint, but be sure and read before you flash any Rom.

Good catch, Wy. The model listed in that thread is definitely our S3.

Please do this section a big favor and confirm the ROM will work on the Sprint/ Boost/ Virgin Mobile devices. If not, then please remove the link you posted. A newcomer may accidentally flash the international ROM and brick their phone.

Thanks. :thumbup::)

Thank you for spotting that and saying something. My bad; I would never intentionally try and steer someone wrong.

I've removed the links and hopefully there's no harm done.
(I don't know if the links in any quotes of my post will persevere now I've removed the originals; if not they'll need removing manually)

.... confirm the ROM will work on the Sprint/ Boost/ Virgin Mobile devices......

I'm waiting for an answer to come back and I'll post it as soon as I know for sure.

Lesson learned; thanks again. Well spotted.

Sorry; NeatROM will NOT work on the Sprint/Boost/Virgin Mobile S3; only the International version (GT-I9300).

I apologize to everybody that I misinformed.

And thanks again to wyelkins and wetbiker7 for picking up on my mistake and making everyone, as well as me, aware of it :o

No problem. We all make mistakes. I can't count the times I've had to go back and edit my posts lol.

Sure would have been nice if the ROM was compatible though. :)

SqOh no, I must admit I'm making progress... still I've got A noobish question ( i think) It goes here right? Lol
Okay so i have several backups, custom & stock.. I've got dev clearance on androidfilehost & my only hesitation in uploading full flashable Roms is in that are my accounts info/personal data omitted from Philz Touch backups?
Example 1 (custom flagz + backed up before & after data wipe)
/boot
/recovery
/system
/data (needed for stock restore?)
/and-sec (is this needed for a stock restore?)
/modem (already uploaded flashable modem)

Example 2 - A ROM for the less fortunate (corrupted or otherwise)
**Use to Return to stock, + Root & Philz Touch
/boot (Essential)
/recovery (essential)
/system (essential)
/data (needed?)
/and-sec (essential)
/cache (optional-omitted)
/modem (essential to my preference)
+
EFS backup separate (what is the main function of efs, ill look it up I am unsure)

In short... will my account/personal data be stored & if so how to remove it.

this will be rather easy to answer I assume.
Im being really cautious & It'd be a big help to get this answered
:D

**EDIT resolved... yeah it doesn't backup account data figured it out by testing after i wiped my phone. Sorry for the elongated eyesore of a noob question.
