Root [Boost Mobile] Official CyanogenMod 11 Nightlies!

Finally, I found the issue. I have 3g status!

I am on cm11 right now but I can almost guarantee you 99% it's the same on EVERY rom I had issues with.

Breakdown:
I got frustrated and pretty well gave up on the fact of getting the data working, so i ended up going to jsdingle's mk5 TW rom.
I was about to settle in setting it up and I look at the signal and it said 4g, and Iw as like hrmm ok yeah 4g, then a lightbulb went off....I was like wow, 4g....default start?......I WONDER!?!?!?.......so I reloaded cm11 one last time, went into the wireless and network settings, then to mobile networks, then to preferred network. Under that I picked CDMA/EVO Auto, and bingo 3g popped on almost immediatly.

What was happening is it was defaulting to 4g, and since KK is having problems with 4g, and that was default it wasn't kicking on......as soon as I switched to 3g bingo data. So all this time it was defaulted to 4g.

Who knew, obviously not me! lol

So as of right now I am issue free....and on aosp!!!!!!!!

Hello, I've read through this thread multiple times and I was able to get CM 11 working on my GS3 from Boost Mobile. I will say that CM11 has made me love this phone once again. It finally is as smooth as it should be.

I do have a couple of issues that I have not seen anyone else really comment on and I was wondering if my problems are unique or not.

First, Bluetooth is very flaky. On start up I always get a message that Bluetooth Share has crashed and my phone will not connect to my car audio system for phone calls unless I manually restart Bluetooth several times. Eventually it will connect but I have to mess around with it for a few minutes and there does not seem to be a pattern to the steps taken to get it working.

Second, MMS is not working. I saw in previous posts that some people may be having a similar problem. I have seen various posts with suggestions on how to fix but I'm not certain if there is really one recommended fix that I should be trying.

Third, Data (3G and working LTE) only works if WiFi is not activated and if WiFi is activated, the phone must be restarted for data to come back. I have seen that many other people seem to have this same issue but I've not really seen anyone say they have a solution other than just restarting the phone. This isn't that big of a deal and at least has a partial fix that is more of an inconvenience than a headache.

If anyone has any suggestions to these problems I would appreciate it. Better yet, to the guy who started this thread, it would be awesome if you could add these solutions (assuming they exist) to your first post so people don't have to wade through several pages of posts and proposed suggestions that may or may not work.

Hey is there a .zip file with the mg2 modem out there that can be flashed from philz thanks to anyone that helps
Or can it only be done from Odin on Windows

Biker has links in this post in his sticky on working ROM's, mods, etc.:

http://androidforums.com/boost-mobile-galaxy-s3-all-things-root/772094-working-roms-mods-kernels-modems-ect-boost-s3.html#post6155042

Sprint modems are usable as well, I keep all possible modems in a folder on my SD card for easy flashing, but I have found that our MG2 and MK5 are the best for me.

Well, that is one way to go about trying to get the attention of the thread author. Here would be a better way:

"To the thread OP"
"To the thread author"

Or, best of all, my username is right there in the OP, put an "@" in front of it and Tapatalk will alert me that I've been mentioned.

For starters, welcome to the forums! I will say that I have had NONE of these problems, and this thread is designed for discussion of one of my favorite ROM's, CyanogenMod, therefore my OP is geared toward what I have experienced personally. It is assumed that you have read through the stickies and are aware of the tools at your disposal when flashing a custom Sprint ROM, such as the need for an APN fix to ensure that MMS and data work in the manner in which they should, since this is more of a generic problem and not a CM-specific problem. Here are three additional resources that will help you choose which nightly might be best for you (nightly because if one doesn't suit you, there is literally a different version for each day since CM11 dropped on 12/7/2013, so at this point there are almost 40 to choose from):

CyanogenMod | Android Community Operating System Official CM website, download link is at the top, choose d2spr

CM11 Nightlies Changelog - D2spr Website with the changelogs for each nightly, so you can see what has been fixed

[ROM][OFFICIAL] CyanogenMod Nightly Builds for d2spr - xda-developers XDA thread for CM11 nightlies; yes, there are almost 900 pages because it was originally the thread for CM10.2, so go to the last post and work your way back from there, instead of starting at the first post

Finally, for the Boost side, the best single resource is Biker's sticky thread:

http://androidforums.com/boost-mobile-galaxy-s3-all-things-root/772094-working-roms-mods-kernels-modems-ect-boost-s3.html

Thank you for the help I actually just found it right before u posted that gonna try it now

Keep us posted for sure! Best advice I can give is to be very familiar with the material in the stickies. A lot of problems are solved via those threads. If something is truly ROM-specific, then post in that thread, if it exists, or start a new thread with a title that will get the attention of the frequent users here on the forums. There is a lot of shared knowledge going on here, as well as a nice joining of forces between both Boost and VM, so if there is an answer/solution to be had, chances are someone will be able to provide it! I will definitely compliment you on your post, too, since it was detailed enough to get us started on possibilities. Nothing drives me more crazy than a post that is so vague that everyone has to play Twenty Questions to get at the heart of the problem, which wastes time that could be spent offering solutions, and leaves the door open for dangerously bad advice from random users who just assume they know what the problem is. And again, welcome to the forums!

struckn, thanks for the post and sorry about not including your name in my initial message. I was trying to fire off a quick message before taking off for a meeting and I didn't take the time to check the first post. I meant no disrespect by it.

As for the stickies, I will look through them again to see if I can find solutions to my problems. I thought my issues where a little more common to others in this thread but apparently not. Looks like I have some homework to do.

No problem bro, not mad or anything, just pointing out a better way to get my attention! I know when I'm using Tapatalk my responses come out somewhat different than when I have full computer access. Pretty sure Biker's thread will help a lot in general, and I am pretty sure 2/3 of your issues are related to APN and modem issues/fixes. Bluetooth is something I have seen reported on numerous threads related to AOSP based ROM's, not just CM11, so I think that aspect of your problems is most likely going to be related to finding a nightly that works best for you. Alpineman, an XDA contributor, actually just posted a flashable version of his APN fixes, I know the Boost side has been using his manual fix for some time; on the VM side, @MopedRyder provided some flashable .zip files some time back, which have worked well for us. If you need any links or anything let me know.

PS-Didn't mean to sound callous about any problem I haven't directly experienced. I try to answer any question/problem if I have the knowledge base for it, as I do extensive reading on any aspect of the S3 that I can. At the very least, I will try to point someone in the right direction if I don't have a concrete answer.

PPS-Part of my post that quoted @jwljr2 was meant for you as well, couldn't keep track of whose posts I was dealing with. Putting out a detailed question/problem post is super helpful to everyone else on the forums because then more accurate advice can start coming in sooner rather than later. Thanks for that for sure!

Well I have another question and I hope it hasn't been answered before in this thread I skimmed the 30 something pages didn't see anything on it and checked the other topics so maybe someone could help me

Here is the method on the Virgin Mobile side, should be the same for Boost. You need to have done one of two things: 1) backed up all your apps with Titanium Backup while on a stock ROM (or stock based like JD's Knox free version) or 2) made a Nandroid backup of your stock ROM. If number one is the case, go into TB, find the Voicemail app, and restore just the app, not app + data. The app + data will not work and TB will hang trying to restore. If number two is the case, go into TB and choose the Restore from Nandroid option. What is happening currently is that Sprint is trying to help you with your voicemails from their 9016 number, and the text comes through in strange fashion. You should still be able to dial in from the phone to your voice mailbox, but it is nice to have the Visual VoiceMail working for sure. If you don't have options one or two available, you will want to make a backup of your current setup, flash a TW ROM, backup all the apps with TB, make a Nandroid, then restore your CM11 and follow the above procedure.

Ok I don't have a backup of the stock Rom yes dumb me but I'll try the other method also what is TW and where can I get a Tw Rom?

P.s shouldn't I be getting notifications that I have a voice mail pending at least?

Thanks for any help you can provide

TW is TouchWiz, just means anything based on stock. Always have the zip for a stick ROM plus a backup of a working stock setup on your SD card, you never know when you will need it. I would recommend taking the time to run JD's version, get it set up how you want, then make your backup off of that. Backup using Titanium before making your nandroid. Then when you restore your CM11 backup, restore just the voicemail app.

So any news on Cm11 builds ??

Just the standard nightly issues, nothing real special from one build to the next. However, for users of Bluetooth (that does not include me, but passing on what I have read), the 1/21 nightly is probably your best bet for the time being. Been running the Snapshot for most of the month with zero issues, but am currently setting up Vanir to run for a few days, unless official Carbon releases sooner. CyanFox also has run very well for me when not using CM11.

I was very impressed with Vanir. It pulled a lot of juice from my battery but then again, I was setting it up too. :D

Another heads up with Vanir, the dkp 4.3 kernel I tried gave me all the rainbow colors all over the screen. I had the same issue with Dirty Unicorns 4.3 so I switched to dkp 4.2. I didn't try it with Vanir since the stock kernel was running so well and I just reverted back to it but if you do decide to try the dkp kernel, you might want to try the 4.2 version. It fixed the same issues I was having with Dirty Unicorns and I have a feeling it'll work the same with Vanir too. ;)

Overall, from what I was able to test with Vanir, I was very impressed with it. It ran great with the stock kernel and is snappy as can be. the only other issue I had with the ROM was it locked up on me in landscape mode. I messed with some of the settings and checked the 180 degree setting. A reboot and battery pull wouldn't fix the issue either. I went ahead and did a battery pull, put it back in and then wiped cache and dalvik. It booted right up and ran fine from then on. The 1st thing I did when It got booted up was went in and unchecked the 180 degree setting too. LOL. :p

@jwljr2, if you do decide to use Titanium, which I recommend, make SURE you ONLY restore the app and not the data. That goes with any ROM when using Titanium to restore apps. I use Titanium to restore apps from ROm to ROM, I just don't restore ANY of the data at 1st. After awhile you'll figure out which apps are safe to restore data and whch ones will cause you issues. I have 3 or 4 apps that I know are safe to restore app data with. Tapatalk is one of those apps. Facebook is another. Like I said, you'll get it figured out. :)

As a general rule I have always done app+data.....now system is a different story, I would NOT recommend system stuff because it can and most times will cause issues.....but as for the apps+data I've never really had any issues.

I've done it on a dozen or more different roms from TW to AOSP to CM, and have always backup up apps+data and restored apps+data, and to this day I haven't had any issues.
Perhaps it's different with different people maybe. Only thing I have had a real issue with is the system/system+apps, because each rom has a so called different setup and placement at times and different way it does things with said system, so restoring system apps and/or data can cause it to freak out.
I learned that the really hard way when I was on my s2, it took me almost a week to finally figure out I was installing system apps as well as regular apps + data, thanks to a lil help from friends.....it's nice to have friends who know about stuff, so I can learn the stuff too. I have come SO far since the s2 with roms, what a kernel, modem, and rom is, and how they are all separate instantiates (kida) but they work in conjunction with each other....it helps knowing what stuff is to make life SO much easier when flashing :)

Flashing so much and learning on my s2, then coming to here was a easy transition, simply because I learned so freeking much on the s2

I wouldn't need to modify anything to flash this and function properly besides the mms fix and 4g fix on boost right? Meaning any script that needs to be modified to flash. It's modified for boost/virgin right?

Any version I have posted in this thread has been properly modified to flash, correct. I have also flashed them personally first to make sure they work.

Cool. I plan on flashing tomorrow morning. I've read the thread bit I'm rooting and flashing this tomorrow. Hopefully all goes well

Not knowing if a person is changing ROMs, upgrading to a new bootloader , build, etc, I think it's best to advise restoring the apps minus data just to be safe.

People who've been around awhile know what is safe and what isn't. You're a prime example. You know what apps are safe and what aren't.

Personally, I always restore all my apps 1st without the data. I'll then go back and restore the data to several apps I've found that never give me any issues. Dropbox, Facebook, Tapatalk, Task list, Amazon, and a few others are on my known "safe" list. The rest I just leave be. Most only require a simple set up. :D

Cool Rom so far. No complaints. Battery life is good, very smooth. Haven't been able to test our 4g yet. I flashed the fix and it seems like I lost data altogether. I take it the 4g fix is already baked in?

If you use any from the OP. Then no. You don't have to
