Root [Boost Mobile] Reactivation?

Endofear

Newbie
Hi! So I've researched the fixes, ROMs, and recoveries that I need to get a fully functional Galaxy S3 from BST. But I was wondering, will the phone be de-activated, and will I have to pay to reactivate it, if it is necessary? Will a Boost Employee even reactivate it?

You don't have to pay for activation. .. you should activate your phone before hand, but you can do it after if necessary if your on a touchwiz rom. .. gl

One of the easiest ways to activate a phone is via the Boost website. You enter the required ID #, and reboot the phone. You may have to do a profile update to which can be found in the phone's settings.

Are you buying a new phone from Boost or are you buying a used phone? Also, is the phone Boost branded?

I've already bought the phone, and it is Boost-branded. It hasn't been used except by me, and I am using my own account

I was just wondering if rooting it and flashing a rom onto it got rid of the activation and I needed to get someone to reactivate it?

AOSP ROMs can mess with activation. You cannot do a profile update while running an AOSP ROM either. We just had a member in here who messed around and flashed an AOSP ROM before activating and ended up getting stuck with a phone that wouldn't activate. Be careful.

My advice would be to activate before doing anything. If the phone tries to update, do not take the update. It will probably be trying to install Knox. You do not want that.

How about activate before you root so you know the device works and have good signal . then root and make a BACKUP. before playing around so if it don't u have a BACKUP. to get back in working order .

So should I activate the phone once I've rooted before I flash the ROM? Will flashing the ROM keep the activation?

You can root fist if you would like but I would do it in the order brainz just suggested.

I've already activated it but I haven't rooted it. Should I activate after root? Or is that not needed? How should I keep the activation after flashing the Rom?

No activation first rooting second and make a BACKUP third. Once u activated don't need to worry unless you don't pay the CARRIER PHONE BILL

So once I've downloaded a backup program, Titanium, I suppose, should I just backup the whole phone? If so, how should I create it into something that is bootable?

Okay, once I've rooted, and I've made the backup. Should the flash keep the activation? Sorry if I'm beating a dead horse.

Just to clarify, I should backup the Apps And System Data in Batch Mode in Titanium and is that so? And if things go south, I should flash the ROM made by jdsingle? If I do flash the ROM, can I still do a profile update and reactivate the phone?

Bro, once that phone is activated it should stay activated. If you flash a ROM and aren't able to get signal or Internet it's not because the phone has become deactivated. It's because either your APNs are wrong or you need to upgrade your modem.

The 1st thing you need to do after flashing a recovery is to make a few backups. Make sure you save one or two of those backups on a pc just in case your SD card fails.

As for using Titanium, yes. You do a mass backup in batch mode. Just keep in mind when restoring those apps on a different ROM it is not a good idea to restore the app data. You should only restore the app itself. There are quite a few apps that will allow you to restore their data when switching ROMs. You need to restore the app data one by one. That way if something goes wrong you'll know which app caused it.

As long as you stick with stock based ROMs you'll be able to do PRL and profile updates. AOSP ROMs such as Liquidsmooth, Carbon, CM11, etc. do not allow PRL or profile updates. This is something you need to keep in mind.

If things go South, which they shouldn't as long as you thoroughly read up on what you are doing, you will be able to flash one of the recovery backups that you should have already made. If worse comes to worse, the work by JDsingle is available.

My best advice for you is to make a backup before attempting to flash anything new. Also, read through this thread.

Okay, once I've rooted, and I've made the backup. ...

I may be wrong but it sounds that your thinking of "make a backup" is backing up with Titanium Backup, which is what TB is for. But what we mean by it is make a nandroid backup of your entire phone by using CWM/TWRP/or PHILZ recovery all of which can be found in the rooting section.

If you already knew, cool. If not, I hope I helped clarify.

Alright. Thanks for all the help. So Ill be rooting, and Afterwards, I will make a nandroid backup in PhilZ and then flash CM 11. Is that alright?
