and locate my post that shows you the steps to replace and flash TWRP. Don't worry, just follow the steps and you will be fine. Sounds like you've got CWM without the recovery fix. Just locate my post that replaces a few of the steps in the original guide. It will flash a fully functional TWRP recovery. Once you have that, you will be able to see your sd card and then you can root.
TWRP is much better on this phone in my opinion. The ROMs I have ran interact with it better. Plus, TWRP is touch!

i had the same problem... there is a fix... you are going to have to use a modded recovery found here: http://androidforums.com/boost-mobile-galaxy-s3-all-things-root/758966-recovery-fix.html
newer S3's have been updated before release, there are now new mesures to stop use from getting custom recovery to stop us from getting root... most people wont have a clue what we're talking about because they did not have this problem... i had the phone for months before a fix was found, and every one thought i was crazy!
sounds like wetbiker7 has found one of the modded recoveries for twrp, but there is one for both.
