Boot Ubuntu from flash drive

I was finally able to get a workable download from Rufus, 3.4. I guess it's on the flash drive now. Assuming it is, how the heck do I boot into Ubuntu

Just to check, do you mean Rufus is on the USB or the Ubuntu boot image is on the USB?

Did you run Rufus and have it copy the Ubuntu files to the USB? If you did then you boot from the USB drive and have it install Ubuntu on a separate partition on your hard drive.

Apparently what I have on that flash drive is free dos. I tried to boot up with it and then I tried to avoid it. What I finally had to do was remove it from the pc. Then it let me do the f12 thing and Windows. How the heck do I get Ubuntu on there?

First you download the Ubuntu ISO from the internet, it's over 1GB. then you can run Rufus and have it transfer the ISO to your USB and make it bootable.

Then you boot from the USB and go through the installation steps for Ubuntu.

I shut down the pc last night and the screen looked ok. I opened it this morning and what happened? What can I do about that?!

Definitely a screen or connection problem. If you move the lid open and closed, does it change the patterns of the lines? Does changing the display resolution change the pattern? Finally, does and external monitor work okay? (Just to rule out the graphics chip going bad).

I think the damage might be permanent. Just recently I switched the pc on and it's still doing that. At least I think I know why. When I put that Vivitar flash drive in I removed the Bluetooth adapter. Apparently it was pressed against the screen with the lid down...I wish I did have an external monitor. That would probably fix things.
