Root bootanimation without root

Hey guys,

I'm picking up a mytouch 4g on monday, and I had a question I hope you can answer. In the past I've loaded custom boot animation's to my Droid 2 and Droid X by simply pushing bootanimation.zip to /data/local/. It always worked great and didn't need root. In researching for the mytouch, I'm seeing a lot of things that point to needing root in order to change the boot animation. Is this true? Will my simple adb push no longer work for my boot animations? I seriously have a folder full of them and it'll bum me out.

Thank you for the link. So I suspect I was right in my suspicions that you need to be perma rooted to have a custom boot animation on the MT4G. That kinda sucks. I'm not scared of rooting in any sense, but I liked not having to root to load these before. All it took was "adb push bootanimation.zip /data/local/" and it was done. Now I have to go through this whole process. Bah.

Yeah but what's the big deal with boot animations anyway...who cares...you only see it for a few seconds while you boot then its gone. Lol. Doesn't make your phone preform any better. Guess I care more about things that enhance the performance of my device more than I do about silly animations that serve little to no function...I just don't see the point, but hey to each their own.

Yeah I absolutely see where you're coming from. For me things like the boot animation are more of a "because I can" than a "because it's important". One of the things I love about Android is the customizability, and that can include making me believe for a moment that my myTouch 4g is actually a Droid X or an HTC Thunderbolt. Hell, if I'm feeling nostalgic what's to stop me from pretending it's a G1 and I'm back in 2008? Time travel is awesome...
