Root Bootloop after changing font - can't flash amon ra

obscuro

Well-Known Member
Scotty, I changed my font to Roboto on stock, rooted GB on Rezound. Phone was working fine, but my battery died and when I try to restart phone while plugged in, I get stuck in a bootloop (it boots to home screen and then freezes trying to load HTC lauancher). I was on stock recovery, but I can't seem to flash my amon ra recovery using the commands in your root guide. It says it flashes OK but when I choose recovery in bootloader, it just bootloops to home screen again. I am getting the hboot error about not being able to find PH98IMG.zip. I have never installed a custom ROM so I'm not sure what I need to do. I have a nandroid backup, but 1) I can't get to amon ra to restore it 2) the backup is a couple of weeks old so I would prefer to fix the problem without restoring if possible. Can you help? You can reply here or at oakcityus@gmail.com Thanks

PS I tried "Clear storage", still bootlooped. I have tried temp-launching amon ra too but it just re-sets the whole phone again when I choose recovery.

Thanks for that, feel a lot better in amon ra...Unfortunately, tried restore and it said "Oops, something went wrong." I tried wiping the cache and dalvik-cache, and restoring "Google proprietary system files" and will see if that works. Do you know what I might could wipe/restore to just get the default font back? I think that's what's causing me the problems.

By the way, even though I am an Android/tech nut, I had never dared to unlock/root my phone until I found your guide. It made everything easy, really appreciate you writing it.

Restoring my "first flash after root" backup. I am confused, what is the difference between "flashing ROM/ firmware" and flashing a backup of your stock, rooted ROM?

Firmware is hboot,radio,and some.other bits.

Your backup is only restoring the OS(software).

A common reason to.get oops something went.wrong error is low battery level.

I always wipe data, cache, dalvik wen restoring.

I am still bootlooping after restoring my backup. It looks like the stock font is back, but when I pull the ring on the phone and it says "Loading..." on the homescreen, it freezes and reboots. What should I try next?

Did you restore from a.fastboot.booted recovery? If not, then try that(permanent. recovery cant restore kernels)

Try wiping boot and system,in addition to the data, cache, falcon.

If it was fastboot booted, then I'm not sure what to think. Try installing "mini ruu" from the root thread. Failing that, you may need to relock and run the full, signed ruu.

I don't know if this matters, but stock HBOOT was giving me the "No image found" error. So I'm going to put PH98IMG-2.01.605.11-vigor-recovery.zip (renamed to PH98IMG.zip) on the external SDCARD (for others' future reference, amon ra has a USB toggle option that lets you mount it).

(I did wipe system, boot, cache, dalvik-cache and .android_secure before trying these.)

Will let you know if it works.

EDIT: Well, I do have my phone back now. I am not sure if putting the PH98IMG.zip on the sdcard worked because I never got back into hboot. Maybe it was the full wipes. Thanks for all your help.

Lessons I learned:
1) Don't compress nandroid backups.
2) Be careful changing the system fonts, it can lead to boot loops. (Good to have a custom recovery on hand, as well as the stock recovery found elsewhere on this forum.)
3) Do nandroid backups often, as well as Titanium backups.

Double-check my terminal commands with Scott's root guide. http://androidforums.com/rezound-al...ys-noob-friendly-root-guide-start-finish.html

Well, I thought I had fixed it, but apparently only temporary. On a standard boot, unplugged from PC, I get to the ring unlock screen and then it freezes when I try to unlock it.

I had put PH98IMG.zip on SDCARD and said yes to the update in HBOOT before this happened. Now I can't get back to fastboot (my only options are update or no.)

Any ideas? I'm on a mac, so not sure if I can run the RUU.

EDIT: Since my phone seemed to work after I had toggled the external SDCard, could mounting the sdcard be the problem Im having when it loads to home screen?

It was the stock recovery you had linked to somewhere (PH98IMG-2.01.605.11-vigor-recovery.zip). Somehow, doing the update again (before deleting it) seems to have done the trick. It sent me back to bare-bones OS, but at least my phone works. Is 201.605.11 the latest firmware version?

Think I have root still, but going to have to reinstall all my apps.

ok,im pretty confused now about what youve done, and havent. ill try and read back over it now it has my undivided attention.

did you do a factory reset or clear storage in hboot after installing the stock recovery? otherwise, just installing the stock recovery should not have deleted your personal data.

but at any rate,im glad its working for you again :)

I did clear storage and wipe everything but sdcard at some point in all of that. All I can figure is it was something in my /system/ that had been altered by changing the default font. Using Titanium Backup helped me get back a lot. Appreciate all your help scotty.

youre quite welcome, but im not sure if anything i said helped,lol...

also sorry for the short replys earlier,i was still at work :)

Trust me, you helped me a ton. My knowledge of adb/fastboot is based on your guide, couldn't have done it w/o.

Out of curiousity, what/where is the mini-RUU you spoke of? (I learned how to flash them from Macs.) I ask because I just downloaded the 487 MB full RUU to put in my Rezound Root toolkit folder. :)

To date, I haven't tried out any ROMs...CleanROM Pro looks interesting but I hate to pull the trigger on that when the ICS OTA is apparently so close to coming. I take it that to come back to stock from a custom ROM, you could just run the stock RUU?

NP with you being at work....I am a newspaper reporter so it kills me to be without my phone. You saved my neck!

the mini-ruu is in the 2nd post of http://androidforums.com/rezound-al...ndly-root-guide-start-finish.html#post3997776

basically, its just the stock boot, system, and recovery images. it lets you go back to stock without having to relock the bootloader. since the s-on unlocked hboot is prtecting hboot, radio, etc, there arent many situations where relocking and running the full ruu should be needed.

it just saves a little time, since to run the full ruu,you need to relock, run ruu, then re-unlock. all of wich will require multiple reboots :D
