Help Bought the LG Esteem, few ?s

answer1o1

Newbie
This is my first Android phone, been using iPhone's since the first one. Skipped on the 4S and went with the LG Esteem. So far I like this OS way more than iOS. I have a few questions though. Is there anyway to backup my phone? Like the apps/games and all that? I know rooting is similar to jailbreaking, but I'm not sure what exactly it does and what benefits it has. And my phone has been randomly restarting itself, is this normal? The guy at Metro said it does that when it updates.

You can use Titanium Backup once you root your phone to backup your phone and your apps. It is definitely beneficial to root your phone. You can remove the bloatware off of your phone and have more space and a quicker phone. A great tool to get is the LG Esteem Optimizer. Definitely worth the price. Good luck and welcome to Android.

Also the reboots are not normal but many people seem to be having that issue, supposedly an OTA update is coming soon to address this issue and a few other bugs.
Root gives you full access and control and its pretty easy to unroot you just shouldn't go around deleting system files or changing the boot animation, but all in all you can get rid of those useless metro apps.
Welcome to android :D

also what the metro pcs employee told you straight bull***** theres a problem with some phones random restarting themselves mine hasnt ever done this but others have talked about this here the phone doesnt do this when it updates only when it first download the ota update and my correction this was the only time it happened to me but it was t[for the ota update not just random restarts

Thanks for the quick replies. I want to root my phone, but I'm just wondering if my phone is a possible lemon. In that case I don't want to void my warranty via root. I read somewhere here that it's not possible to unroot this phone yet. I think I'll hold off on the rooting until this update comes out. If the problem stays than I'll go swap it out and root.

Is there anyway to take a screenshot or save pics from FB and such?

Im not sure about the lemon situation, I wish we could figure out the issue.. and it is very easy to unroot, there is even a one click to put all the metro apps back on, but not trying to pressure you its your phone :D
As for the Facebook saving pictures, when you are on a picture, just tap on the picture (dont hold or double tap) and there are some options like share and set as which let you save the picture. Is that what you meant?

Yeah that worked for sharing pics thanks. If I root my phone and the update comes out, once I update does the root stay?

I also noticed in my 'running apps' it shows maps twice is that normal?

Erhhmm not sure about the maps thing but as long as the update doesn't block root you can just re-root like you did the first time. If you do not want it to update automatically you can freeze the mobileupdate.apk until you are ready to update. Dont delete it though ;) also this is important, do not change the boot animation or try apllying things you are unsure about until a recover is released :D anything else?

hmm is there a list of the safe/bloats to get rid of lol? I have the one click root program I'm assuming that's what everyone uses..? I just don't want the phone to brick. I've bricked 1 iPhone (out of 50+ I JB'd) but still had it swapped at the Apple Store :-)

Edit: how would I unroot?

Once you root, like someone said earlier thereis an app called titanium backup. You can backup apps and delete them. You can also freeze and defrost them. that's howi keep maps from running all the time. Freeze it til u need it. maps sucks battery in the background even.

Does it backup to my PC or do I need an sd card?

It saves on your sd card. And once you root there are several screenshot apps. I prefer "screenshot it"by Edward Kim.

I'll definitely grab one. My phone rebooted itself 2 times within an hour.. That's keeping me back from wanting to Root it :-/

You can go ahead and root it. There is a way to remove all evidence in case you have to do a warranty exchange

I think I will. Is there a list for what bloatware to remove and what not to remove?

Edit: I just rooted it. I bought LG Esteem Optimizer. So I can't turn off the boot animation, but everything else is ok right? And do I let it run in the background or can I close it?

You can close it once you "optimize". its safe to disable boot animation through that app. It doesn't delete it.it only disables it. Anything you do with that app is reversible.

I have the optimizer app, superuser and titanium backup. I feel like I'm missing something here lol.. how do I freeze apps? Sorry for all the questions I feel like such a noob. I'm a guru with an iPhone, but this is very different.

Edit: I purchased the pro version for titanium backup. Froze maps and rhapsody.

you might want to freeze mobileupdate.apk (name may differ) as well...

If titanium backup seems tricky at first, open the app and click on problems and it will take you to the titanium wiki. There's a faq and lots of other info

I think I got the hang of it. On the optimizer I did all the options. But the phone still seems a bit laggy at times. With all apps closed i get 175 or less ram still.. is that normal?

You cant post links because you are a new member and dont have enough posts :) By the way welcome to AF and Android!

Everything you need regarding anything root related you can find in this section of the forum Esteem - All Things Root - Android Forums The root program and instructions are at the top posted as a "sticky" If you have any questions just ask on that thread ;)

Is there any way to use emojis on the stock texting app? I used go sms, but it doesn't always send MMS's. I like the stock one better.
