I did a buy one get one and have a spare phone I have not activated. I think I dodged being billed by Verizon. The phone is assigned to a specific number that once activated will reup that number.

Is this phone useless? Can someone hack it and make it open to any number? I was planning on using it as a backup phone. If I can dodge making a 2 year commitment I would like to.

Please let me know if you need more info. Thank you.

Verizon has your ESN for the phone on file. If someone activates your phone, it'll activate on your account, even if you sell it. The contract doesn't start billing until you activate the phone, so you didn't dodge being billed - this is how the system works.

As for the rest, hacking your phone to avoid Verizon noticing that you got merchandise for free is illegal and you won't get an answer on this forum. It's against the rules.

Like it or not, you have to go through Verizon if you want to use that phone. Trying to hack the phone to get around that is, as binary visions said, illegal and cannot be discussed here on AF.
