Help Brand new to Android - a few questions / problems

SirMerkel

Newbie
Hi guys,

I got my Atrix today. I have a few questions, apologies if they seem quite ignorant - as the subject states, I'm brand new to Android, plus my phone didn't come with a manual.

I'm using the Atrix in the UK, on O2. For some reason, I can't get a 3G signal. I have the H+ sign at the top, but O2 don't have this functionality yet, and I can only browse the web when I have a wifi connection. Can anyone provide any help with this?

My phone synced everything from my Gmail account, is there a way to block out some of the contacts? It also appears to import all of my contacts from Facebook in to the phone list, can I delink that?

Is there a battery indicator which shows the percentage? Like the iPhone has..

Thanks for any help guys, really appreciated.

Dan

Dan,

One of the best things to do on this phone is to go to the "help center" and it'll pretty much answer most of your questions..

To change what Contacts are being displayed...
In Contacts push the Menu button > Display Group then select what you want to see... ie:Google

As for the Battery percentage... there are a few widgets you can get off the Market...I use Circle Battery, which will give you the actually percentage 78, 63, etc. and not the 90, 80, 70, etc.

Also Search around the forum, a lot of your questions might have already been asked/answered.

:D

Hi Dan, welcome to Android Forum. Hope you are enjoying your phone so far :) Did you fill out O2's information in the Access Point Network correctly? You're able to make phone calls and basic Edge/2G internet? In Network settings of the phone, under 'select network', you can force the phone to only be in 3G. It is currently set to automatic.

Oh hey there Roze, btw i love you <3 :p

New to Andriod myself, just came over from a Blackberry, a couple of simple questions:

1. Sync with Ubuntu, is it as hard as Blackberry or easier

2. Outlook Vcards - how do they migrate in

3. Why can't I turn my Google Notebook link into a widget? I'm pretty sure I'm following the directions.

4. I had a Blackberry app that turned off and on my wifi based on cell tower triangulation, does one exist in Andriod land?

5. Does a Documents to Go license transfer?

6. Does Worldmate link to calendars?

7. Does anything exist in Andriod land that would let me lock the phone for kids to have; ie one screen or app and let them have it in the car.

8. I can't get Bluetooth to work - I have a Parrot and a Jabra car speakerphones, they can't seem to find each other - am I missing something? and

9. How do I get a widget OFF of the screen? Thanks

Welcome PMinix to AndroidForums!!! I hope you're enjoying your Atrix :D

I reformated your number bullets as it was a bit hard to read. I hope you don't mind :)

Since you're new to Android, please read this beginner guide to understanding Android before you download any applications :)

I'll try to answer your question:
1) Try Ubuntu One
2) don't know
3) Not understanding your question. Is a Google Notebook link like a site link? You can make a short cut with it using Desktop visualizer or App Organizer to create a shortcut or a widget shortcut.
4) I know that a few exist. If you have basic code knowlege, get Tasker. You can set it up so that based on GPS location (maybe even tower locations) you can turn automatically on or off.
5) I don't think so. I remember reading other ex-RIM users had to rebuy the app again. The phone comes preinstall with QuickOffice so you can use that :)
6) don't know
7) You can try SmartLock or Smart App
8) did you turn the phone's bluetooth on? You need to pair it up first before you can use it.
9) Hold long press on the widget for a second or two, you can move it now and at the bottom of the screen there's a trash can, drop it there to delet it.
I hope you enjoy your Atrix!

If you have any questions pertaining to Android Applications, please post them here :) But remember, to search before you post if you can ;) Remember, everyone was new to Android at one point or another and would have asked the questions you've asked :)

If you have time, check out this thread here. They have posts from members listing some of the apps they love and you'll find some great ideas :) That's what I did when I got my first Android phone.

Thanks Roze I figured out #9 and #8 I'm sure I'm got everything turned on and discoverable, etc. will keep playing with it. I try some of the other stuff at home tonight.

Thanks all, fixed most of this - now I need to get a case. Thing has fallen out of my pocket three times already. 1 . So, I have to go to the cloud to sync .... that doesn't feel right for someone coming from the locked down Blackberry world. 2. Figured out vCards, I think 3. Figured out Google Notebook - it is a weblink, just had to be signed in to Google 4. Started playing with Tasker -- is there a way to import config scripts for it? and a source of them? 5. QuickOffice sucks, so I will have to pony up 6. Nope, and it needs to be fixed - Worldmate is a killer app. 7. Sort of what I wanted, will keep looking 8. this unsorted itself - I never like it when my electronics just start working on their own. 9. check Thanks all; still a few screwed up things: The installed browser seems to have a problem with Amazon - a blank, page feature blocks the top half of the screen - stopping login. Is there a simple fix, I don't see a control that helps, or do I go Opera? (Whats the trick on returns here?)

Flash doesn't seem to be working. Check your app to see if you have the newest Adobe Flash installed and if it's enabled (?). I'm not sure why you can't use Flash. Mine was Flash enabled out of the box. You can try Opera to see if another browser can play Flash.
