Root Bricked my phone...

Libertine

Lurker
When I turn on my phone it just stays on the hero screen loading..
When I try to fast boot it it by going onto HBoot Mode it checks the SD and there are a lot of No images and failures. Then I click back for fastboot mode and it takes me to the front screen again.

It happened when I tried to add a 2.3 ROM to it through ROM Manager...
Any advice?

When you boot by holding home + power, do you see the clockwork recovery menu? You should be able to, since flashing a ROM alone usually can't brick a phone.

Oh great, thanks a lot didn't see that. I'm a noob ;/.
What do I do when I'm on the clockork recovery menu?

Well it's capable of everything ROM manager is, since that app is basically just a more user friendly way to control the recovery menu.

First you need to make sure you're flashing a ROM for the right type of Hero. If your phone looks like the image below my post, you want a GSM ROM. If it looks like this, you need a CDMA ROM.

Assuming you're flashing the right kind of ROM, chances are that your phone is bootlooping because of a corrupt ROM download or because you didn't wipe properly before flashing.

What you want to to is,
- Redownload the ROM you were flashing, to ensure it's not a corrupt download, and put it on the sdcard.
- Boot to recovery
- Pick 'Wipe Data/Factory reset'
- Flash the ROM again and reboot.

That should sort it.

Worst comes to worst you can always install one of the official firmware RUU.exe files using your PC to return to stock, but that's not your only option :)

How did you try to flash 2.3? Did you download the firmware your self, or did you get ROM manager to do all of this for you? I need to know so I can explain this properly.

However, it's still possible to access the sdcard by mounting it in the phone - just like when you're using the original firmware and you get the option of what you'd like to do when you plug in the USB cable. Just plug the USB cable in and click the following option in the recovery menu: Mounts and Storage >> Mount USB Storage. That should bring it up on your PC.

Ah ok. It's possible to get ROM manager to download some (but not all) ROMs for you, so I was wondering if that's how you'd done it. But it's better that you know how it's done manually :)

So yeah, all you need to do is:
- Redownload the latest cyanogen nightly .zip.
- Mount the sdcard to your PC as I explained above.
- Put the cyanogen.zip anywhere on your sdcard
- Unmount the sdcard
- Pick 'Wipe Data/Factory reset'
- Pick 'Install zip from sdcard'
- Pick the option to chose your zip file from the sdcard and then it will flash cyanogen again for you.
- Pick the option to reboot and you're done.

When I try to install the .zip file it says:
Opening update package...
E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(No such file or directory)
Installation aborted.
:/

When you clicked 'Install zip from sdcard', you clicked the first option that refers to 'update.zip' right? You need to pick the second(?) option which lets you pick your own .zip file. Then you'll see a list of files on the sdcard and you'll need to navigate to the cyanogen.zip file you put on there.

Thank you very much! I've gotten it sorted.
For future reference, is it easier to get the ROM's straight from ROM Manager? And will the be better?

If you're using cyanogen then it can be quite a good way to do it, but the selection for other ROMs isn't all that great (at least not for my current phone). You seem to get a wider and more up to date choice if you go straight to the devs themselves.

There are advantages to doing it both ways really. If your ROM of choice is available on ROM Manager, then it's convenient, but most aren't.

Thanks for all the help, I'm running VillainROM v13 at the moment.
I'm just having difficulties trying to partition my SD card so that I can use A2SD. When I'm on Clockork Mod Recovery there is no option at all to create a partition of any kind. All I can do is wipe cache partition...
