Bringing my phone to europe

douce

Lurker
I'm a Canadian and am looking to bring my phone to Europe. I don't want to experience the roaming fees nightmare so does anyone know how to avoid that?

My thought was I would just turn off my 3g/4g and run on wifi where available to access email, facebook and skype. But I'm not sure how to shut off the Gs so it doesn't roam. I feel a little out of my league here. Hope someone can shed some light.
Thanks

Look in your wireless and network settings -> mobile network settings. Precise menu options and names will depend on the phone/software version, but you want to turn off mobile data. If you have an option to disable data roaming that should be enough, but I normally turn data off completely as well, just to be sure.

The important thing is that it's the mobile data you need to turn off rather than 3G, because you don't want to use 2G data either.

If you tell us what phone you have somebody may be able to give precise instructions.

Thanks Hadron,
My phone is a LG P935, software version LG-P935 V10a

Under Mobile networks there is an option called "Data enabled". I turned this off and it looked like it disabled. So I enabled wifi and all looked good. But I was able to make a local call using the mobile network, I then went back into network to find the "Data enabled" feature turned back on. Does this make sense?

You could always grab a prepaid SIM in Europe if your phone works on their network.

Question is whether the phone is locked to one network's SIMs? If not, or if you unlock it, then IOWA's solution will be cheapest (especially as you won't pay for incoming calls).

Data turning on again sounds odd.

Yeah, can't go the sim card route, my service is locked. I need to learn how to shut down the roaming. I'll give my provider a call, see what they recommend. The other option is to buy a cheap phone and time overseas.
Thanks

Many times, if you approach your carrier and tell them you will be travelling abroad, outside their service area, they will unlock the phone or provide you with the code to do it yourself.
