my phone has a ? over the battery for some reason and will not charge when on charger..i have had the phone for a year and never had a problem..the battery would die a little fast but that is about it. now it has the ? on the battery symbol and only stays on when connected to charger...what is going on

I'd start by removing the battery then replacing it, making sure that the contacts on both the battery and the battery compartment are clean (I've used a pencil eraser and alcohol wipe to clean those contacts on an old device).
It is possible that after a year of heavy use, your Lithium-Ion battery has become defective. If the cleaning regimen does not change the behavior, I'd just purchase a new battery.

Does the phone turn on with only battery power or do you need to supply external power via usb to get it to turn on?
