Broken Droid2 - Given Droid 3

Lurker
My friend is unfriendly towards technology, to say the least. Having said that, his droid2 that he has had for less than a year just coughed up its last tooth a few days ago. My friend went to the verizon store, and, free of his contract that was nowhere near ready to be up, he is the proud owner of a droid3.

This infuriates me. However not the point.

I have a Droid1. My contract is up in January. I am a diehard physical keyboard kind of guy, so that really limits me to the kind of top-end phones that I can walk around with in my pocket. And, lets face it, by the time january rolls around the Droid3 is going to be a fossil (exaggeration).

I know there's a way, I've had multiple, multiple friends do this over the course of years, and spoken to a friend of mine that works at Verizon about it. My question to you is, what would be the best way of intentionally setting this up? I have a rooted moto droid running Cyanogen 7.1 R1, if my memory serves. I figure my best bet would be to flash back to a stock rom at least, but any ideas what'd be the best way to have these guys at the verizon store pronounce this thing dead? Even if it isn't. Perhaps a "play dead" mode? If not I'll take the risk of potentially breaking it for good, or at least giving it a good brick, I have insurance on my phone, but like I said, I'd just like the upgrade at this point. Thanks.

You're asking for assistance with warranty/insurance fraud. You might want to look at the forum rules... Even if it isn't against the rules here you probably don't want to post your intent on a public forum.

Warranty and insurance are not upgrade programs. Abuse of them is precisely why carriers are so reluctant to replace with newer models.

If you want a newer device then pay for it.

Welcome to the Android Forums!

Unfortunately what you are asking borders on fraud! IF the phone stops working on it's own and Verizon is willing to replace it, that's one thing... but to try to intentionally try to make the phone stop working just so you can try to get Verizon to fix it is simply not something that we discuss here at Android Forums!

Lets ask ourselves another question then, shall we? Would this "upgrade" be under the umbrella of a warranty? In other words hypothetically if a warranty was absent there would be no assistance offered? Or would it be considered insurance. My only experience with either is when I had a phone stolen and had to file the insurance report, which has nothing to do with the warranty.

Ignorance of the forums rules isn't an excuse, I had just gotten finished reading a thread identical to this not 5 minutes before writing this on the forum, and there wasn't a whisper of any issue with its content.

So flag it for a moderator to see, because clearly (as stated by a MODERATOR), it isn't allowed.

It's hardly going to be a "fossil".....

and with the dual core processor, I'm sure the hardware would permit for this phone for the full 18 months. There is another ethical way, if you were to be able to find and buy a used Droid 3 thats in good condition, that would save your upgrade for you.
