Browser and RAM

Can anyone explain why this is the norm with Android phones?

I load a website and the task manager says I'm using 60% of my CPU. I open the browser and load any site, and I'm using 50MB+ of RAM.

Why so much RAM and why so much processing power just to run a browser?

Android uses Webkit layout engine (like Safari on Mac and iOs, Blackberry), which handles the webpage rendering. Even the browser on my PC uses up to hundreds of MBs and basically the memory consumption of PC and phone web engine is the same, CPU usage also. But if I compare the benchmark of my PC and the phone, PC is few-thousand times faster, so if it needs nearly no processing time on the PC, it can load the phone heavily.

What do Opera and FF use then?
I know graphics take a lot more processing. I found that out on dial-up and turned graphics off to get the page to load faster. -

Also remember on a pc..not only is it more powerful, you graphics card will take over the ram requirements..in a phone all this has to come from one place!!
