Help Browser download problems (link to image/pdf downloads as .htm)

I am trying to download jpg, pdf and other files via the stock Motorola xoom browser (Android 3.1) and the only thing it will download is .htm links. I have also tried with the skyfire browser to make sure that wasn't the issue.

any help on this would be appreciated.
