Browser won't play Youtube videos (html5)

Has anyone else noticed that the videos on Youtube (the site, not the app) now seem to be HTML5 and therefore won't play on the Desire's stock browser?

Not really the end of the world as the app still works fine but does this mean that embedded Youtube videos will no longer work? I tried a few on a couple of forums I frequent and the browser played them, but I have no idea if they were old videos or not.

Does anyone know if from now on embedded YT vids will be flash or HTML5? Or is there any way to play HTML5 via the browser?

Thanks

I had a problem over the weekend with you tube saying my flash player was out of date (or something along those lines). I uninstalled flash player updates then reinstalled them and that seemed to do the trick.

Have you got a link to a video that wont work for you and I can give it a try?

I can't remember the exact video mate, sorry. Someone had linked to a Youtube video on Facebook and when I clicked the link it took me to the Youtube site and after a second or two came up with the message "Sorry your browser is not optimised to play this video" (or something along those lines).

I then tried clicking a few other videos from the 'related videos' section to see if it was just a problem with that one video, but they all brought up the same message.

Like I said, I still seem to be able to play embedded Youtube videos and the YT app itself works fine....just not the videos on the site itself.

I'll give it another go this evening and see what happens. I'm actually running the older version of Flash that came installed on the phone (10.1.72.7) so maybe I just need to update that?

I use the xscope browser and am subscribed to the youtube html5 trial. The browser plays videos on it no problem. Whether it's being served html5 or not I can't say, but I assume it is.

Yep, I managed to get it sorted in the end.

Tried another video last night and got the same message "Your browser is not optimised to play this video" etc but I noticed underneath it there was a link to the HTML5 FAQ.

There it basically said I'd been opted in to a HTML5 trial (as adskankster mentioned), and there was a link there to opt out of the trial. I opted out and voila - videos are working again!

Here's the HTML5 page I was referring to if anyone has the same problem (or wants to join the trial):

YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.
