Browsing Ebay for phones

So has any one bought a phone off of Ebay and then activated it for an everyday use phone? I've been perusing the listings for esteems, connects, etc. Basically I want to get a Metro 4G phone, but can't afford to buy new. I'm seeing a lot of them that say bad esn, broken screen etc. I assume that I can't activate a phone that says bad esn.

Any and all thoughts are greatly appreciated.

I got an LG Optimus along time ago off of eBay and it was straight. Just look for things that say bad esn, broken/removed items (case, screen, no battery, etc), and even send the seller a question if you have to. Not only that but you could get an squaretrade warranty as well. I never went through squaretrade for cell phones, but everything else I did go through them with was legit.
