Hi I am new to this phone and don't know what a icon on the top bar means. It looks like a pair of hands cupping a small white battery. What is it and how do I get rid of it?

It sounds like the stamina mode icon. Like this, but with the colours reversed:

It turns connections off and stops apps from using data when the screen is off.

Try Settings -> Power Management to turn it off.
