Building the computer, ran into something, any ideas?

so last night my friend and I started building my computer that I had started a discussion about buying part like 2 months ago.. I still don't have ssd / hdd or video card so I just used his components to test and make sure the motherboard and cpu worked.

Everything seemed to work really well, but no fans were running except of course the heat sink for the processor, not even the psu fan ran, it would start up but shut off.

One thing I do know is my friend missed one of the set screws behind the mobo, that just so happens to be where the fan power plugin is, would this cause problems? he assured me it wouldn't.

I have a NZXT Phantom case, mobo is AsRock x79 Extreme6 lga2011, psu is Corsair AX850 Professional Gold series Modular.

I can post pictures later but I am off to work now so I can't now. If there is any additional info that would be useful I can provide it.

here is a picture, red circle is where the one screw he missed is and yellow arrow is the power for the fans connector:

Thank you

If the psu fan spins then the power to the fan is fine.

Sometimes if the mobo will not draw power through from the psu, the fan won't spin. Would really need to run an OS on it to test properly

I borrowed a friends video card, and hard drive with windows on it, only fans to run were the cpu heatsink fan and video card fan .. on the positive side my processor scores a 7.6 windows rating haha

How long did it run for? What temperature of psu is the psu sey to run at? Did it hit that temp?

I'd look at the temperature thresholds in the BIOS. If the fans spin up on boot and then stop, it most likely isn't warm enough for them to be on.

You could always plug the fans directly into the PSU, you just wouldnt be able to monitor or control their speed.

When he screwed in the mobo he forgot to screw that screw in?

If I were you I might see if you can find a screw and make sure it's in there snugly. That's where your northbridge is (I think) and an area that get super hot.

Regardless, if you can get the screw. it will just make you feel better knowing the mobo is snug and not loose in any way.

Buying 1 screw = $0.20
Peace of mind = priceless.

I have the screw already, he missed it i guess.. But I am planning on putting it in tonight after work. My friend also mentioned that the psu fan most likely just because it wasn't warm enough to have it running, I just wanted to see if anyone else said that.
I am thinking of all the cables that I have with my psu, and I can't think of any that would plug into the fans

Thanks

yea I figured it out, haha something was overlooked, the fan control did not get plugged in :congrats:

and I also put the standoff screw in that was missing

Hey pbf98. I know with some of the Pentium 4s and even up to the Core 2 Duos the fan only span when it was required. Not all the time. I guess it would be different for different manufacturers of different boards.

Cheers
Mark

Since when does the psu fan plug into a fan controller? EVERY psu I've ever looked at just had the fan running. They can be very quiet, but they were running if the psu was powering anything at all.
