busted pantech recovery help

Ok..My wife decided to spike my daughters pantech burst to the floor..It busted the screen but everything else works.It is receiving texts and the bottom buttons light up and all that jazz..We are trying to recover contacts and pictures.I downloaded pantech pc suite and plugged the phone in.It initially recognizes the phone but says the app on the phone is outdated and is not compatible with what is on my laptop.And that i need to update it..Problem is i cant operate the screen to do so..Is there another way?Help.Please dumb it down for me ..i dont speak android..Thanks ahead of time...
EDIT:She doesnt have a Gmail account so thats a shot in the foot..

Actually PC suit installs a app on Handset. Looks like the handset client of pc suite is outdated. My Point is everything will require screen, every single trick requires debugging on. (That i think is on as pc suit is detecting it)
Is the phone rooted / cwm installed.

Have u tried
"adb pull /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases/contacts2.db"
