Buying a Droid: A strange tale . . .

JoeKC

Newbie
Hello, everyone. As my first post I would like to relate my attempts today to purchase a Droid.
1) My first attempt, naturally, was my nearby Verizon Wireless store. There was some sort of desk at the entrance, but no one was at it so I just walked in and started browsing. The store was largely empty. Soon more customers came in. I found I wasn't being helped, but the people who came in after me were. Eventually the manager, "Rude Dude" informed me I would be helped last because I neglected to "sign in" when I entered. Of course the fact that no one was available to sign me in meant nothing. Eventually we got down to business, but no one seemed to know anything about the Droid, but rather seemed more interested in pushing a boatload of accesories at me. Eventually I became disgusted with their attitude and left.
2) Next stop, a more distant Verizon. Here they were much nicer, but wanted to add a $20 "upgrade fee" to the mix. I decided to move along.
3) And then to Best Buy where the lonely looking teenager was the best informed so far. He happily informed me that Best Buy would simply charge me the $199.99 for the phone and I wouldn't have to wait for a rebate debit card. Cool! But there was a catch, of course. He checked my Verizon record and informed me I would be charged a $100 "upgrade fee." So it's no go at Best Buy.
4) A long story should have a happy ending. I returned home and made the purchase online for $199.99, no rebate required, no upgrade fee. Furthermore, I purchased a case and screen protectors for about 30% off. Furthermore they were having a "sale" on their data plan, regular $29.99 for $23.99. Talk about the gift that will keep on giving!

Moral of the story, shop around. Even within the Verizon family, prices seem to vary. (My phone will arrive Thursday, with free Fedex two day shipping.)
I'm glad I found this forum. I already know more about the Droid than any Verizon people I talked to today and I'm looking forward to learning much more.

I did what you did originally when purchasing 2 Storm2s, getting the BOGO Free deal - then I used my one-time 30-day replacement to swap out a Storm2 for a DROID - I never activated the phone, heck, I never even took it out of the box, so VZW waived my restock fee, and now I have my DROID free and clear.

Glad that things worked out for you, and commend your commitment to finding the best option. Ignorant ill informed service is the worst....

Ask technical questions to get referred to the better trained / technologically adept employees. That's what I do :-P

If you walked up to the computer the front screen say "sign yourself in" at a lot of locations they dont have the person that signs you in. Check next time for that. Also, when you say there was a data plan special how long does the special last for?

I get the same price for the data plan b/c my employer has deal with Vzn. It's basically that I get 20% off anything attached to my primary line.

Saves me TONS as I have the $15/mo 'all lines have unlimited text' option that bills to my primary line and I have 3 teens. :)

I'm surprised you had such rude ppl at the store. Every Vzn store I've ever been in, in multiple states, have been polite. Often less informed than I am, but still nice.

I checked on this -- there were no signs anywhere. I don't really know if the data plan is offered to everyone or for how long it will be on "sale" if that's the correct term. I do know that everything I put in my cart, except the phone, was marked down significantly -- i.e, the screen protectors were $9.74 instead of $12.99. The leather snap on case was $18.74 instead of $24.99. I've been a Verizon customer for many years and I stay with them because I've never had any problem getting a signal in my area (or anywhere I go for that matter.)

How did you get a discount on your data plan? I'd like to get something similar if I can !

I don't know how, really. There were two plans I could put in my basket when I bought the phone and I chose the one marked "Email and Web for Smartphone" and it had a price of $29.99 and a line or something through it and marked down to $23.99. This price was confirmed on the email receipt they sent me. There was another option, but I think it was an email plan I didn't need (exchange server?)

I'm going to guess Verizon lets its online store compete against its neighborhood store, but I don't really know and I'm sure they wouldn't tell you.

Yeah, I did and it was hopeless.

Me: "Does the Droid transmit voice dialing over Bluetooth?"

Salesman: "Absolutely."

Me: "Well I've heard it doesn't."

Salesman: "No, we even sell the headsets to go with it." :(

My impression of my local store is the salesmen are being pushed to sell add-ons which have a ridiculous markup. The $19.99 plastic protector they tried to sell me was hilariously cheap. I doubt it would protect anything, except Verizon's bottom line.

That's about it, they don't make their money by being helpful; they make it by selling accessories (with some fairly sneaky tactics at times.)
