Buying a new car... Honda or Mercedes

dan330

My parents are retired.. but want to get a new car..
They like and test drive the accord and c300

27k vs 37k... list price

What is the best website to get dealer invoice price.

How much can I expect to discount off list or price over invoice? Best case?

Which would be better?

not sure personally but im interested to know as well as I'm looking to buy a new car and am new to it as well.

also honda vs mercedes? interesting choices.

whats most important to them with the car? features and detail in the little things? or is that something they could care less about?

They currently have a 2001 accord... and are really happy with the ownership.

But I am guessing the also want to upgrade... have some luxury.. status...

They are chewing over the $10k difference.

Do they really want impress?

retired = fixed income. if they can afford the payments, upkeep, and eventual repairs on the Mercedes, i say go for the Mercedes.

both companies make AWESOME vehicles. so it's largely up to what they can afford without cramping their lifestyle.

my folks(both retired) just bought a 5 series BMW...i know they were up in the air about that or the E series Benz. they traded in the '07 Toyota Avalon for the beemer. they still have their '06 CRV.

I don't know how things are in the USA but in the UK it seems to work like this: the Merc is the better car but you will have a better ownership experience with the Honda because the Honda dealers work harder to provide good customer after sales service.

Check out the price of doing brakes on a merc as compared to a honda. As long as they are prepared for double or triple the cost for service and maintenance, then merc, FTW. But people tend to forget about that when buying a luxury car.

Good point...
But bmw... is all free for first 50k miles.... right?
All you have to do is pay for tires and gas.

IDK about BMW, haven't done much luxury car shopping. LOL

thanks for listening!

Sorry, I must have missed that part of your post. I sometimes get an idea in my head and don't read all the replies, and skip ahead to post my reply.... You did beat me to it Bro...

Sig Sauer, eh? I'm looking for a handgun atm....

I think mercedes are fugly. Their new line is decent but they also completely copied Rolls Royce so that takes away any coolness right there.

Honda is a great car. The problem is the Accord is every other car on the road. But then again so is the Mercedes now since anyone and everyone is extended credit..

I'd go with Honda out of the two.

I think the luxury options you get more or less on both cars (maybe Merc will have a few more there). It is the ownership costs that I think will strongly be different: Merc will simply cost more to have. Also, Hondas are known to be more reliable than Mercs.

With the rising gas price, get the one that is that is the most efficient and give you more per buck per a gallon!!!

Would your parents think of Hybrids :)

I would avoid buying a new car period since they lose so much of their value so quickly. It's just insane how quickly a new car loses it's value. I'd look for a 3-4 year old used car. You can get something that's just as good quality, but for a whole lot less. Also, pay cash, don't make payments. Just my .02.

rose... my dad does not trust hybrid yet... stuck in old thinking.

A.N... i agree but my parents want the "new" car feel.. and not get someone else reject. i like to get 1yr old, but it is their car.

My mom likes the mercedes...
today we test drove the BMW 328i ... she loves it. but the price on BMW has over taken mercedes. i hope i can talk them down...
in the range of $37k out the door with all the options they want.

if it is not brand new.. never owned..

to them, it has been rejected by the first owner(s)... maybe there was an issue with that particular car.

That's what I never understood. If you get a certified used car you pay a little more than a regular used car, but you get a mechanic's inspection plus a dealership that you can sue the bejesus out of if the car has problems. I don't see how that's any different than buying a new car.

The only reason I can see to buy a new car is if you're just filthy rich and you can burn money without it hurting you at all. That is literally what you're doing with a new car. I ran the math one time on a new car that I (foolishly) bought one time. Depreciation on that bad boy was the equivalent of me tossing $150 or so out the window every single Monday on the way to work. It was ridiculous. Stupidest financial decision I ever made.

It is a way of thinking.... they won't change it.

If I force them to change.. and an issue arise... it would all fall on me.. been there and it ain't worth it...

It is not worth it to you and I can understand why..
But to others the.. Virgin... is worth the cost to ownership

since im in the market for another car, im looking new only. but the main reasons why are that the cars im shopping around all had major changes in the 2011/2012 model lineup over their 2010 and lower counter parts. Namely the new mustang GT with their 5.0 coyote engine, and the newer Subaru wrx.

Well, someone has to buy new cars for others to get them used. ;)

It might cost more, but it's also newer and there's a certain status that comes with owning a brand new car (at least for the first year).

About the payments, it depends on the interest rates. If it's something like 3%, you should get the payments and invest your money to get more than 5%. Be careful though, there might be some kind of bonus if you're paying with cash, you have to keep that in mind. :D

PS: I do agree with you though.
